Ulrich Moritz (musician)

Uli Moritz , whose full name is Ulrich Moritz (born August 25, 1953 in Wilhelmshaven ), is a German music and rhythm teacher , composer and percussionist .

Career

After childhood on the North Sea coast, Uli Moritz moved with his family to West Berlin in 1964, where he taught himself to play the drums from 1967 , initially primarily rock and jazz rock.

After graduating from high school in 1973, Moritz studied art education and German and now also took regular drum lessons with Heinz von Moisy .

In 1977 Moritz passed his state examination, became a master student and qualified in the following years a. a. with Manfred Burzlaff ( mallett instruments ), Gerry Brown (rudimental snare, funk), Reinhard Flatischler (body percussion, Latin, Indian), Freddie Santiago (Latin), Dudu Tucci (Brazil), Efrain Toro (Latin drum set, independence) and with National Ensemble Percussion de Guinée and the Congolese percussion ensemble Tuta Ngoma (West and Central African rhythms).

Activity as a music teacher

As early as 1978, however, Moritz began to work as a musician and music teacher himself, namely as a drum, percussion and rhythm teacher. Since then he has been teaching regularly as a lecturer at the Berlin University of the Arts , the Berlin University of Music "Hanns Eisler" and the State Music Academy Berlin, as well as department head of the Berlin-Neukölln music school and long-time member of the board of the Berlin drum center "groove ".

Mention should also be made of his work as a seminar leader of the International Society for Music Education Training IGMF, the Upper Austrian Training Academy for Music Teachers and several German regional music school associations and as a specialist advisor to the Association of German Music Schools.

All of this is supplemented by Uli Moritz's participation in numerous national and international rhythm seminars as well as the organization of his own advanced and advanced training workshops for musicians, teachers, educators, therapists and those interested in music.

In addition to conventional percussion on drum sets , drums or cajons , the focus of his own musical interest is mainly body percussion , rhythm games and rhythmic texts, but also playful experimentation with new sound possibilities, unconventional or still unknown percussion instruments, small percussion, material percussion etc.

Activity as a musician

As an independent musician, Uli Moritz has been involved in concert tours since 1978 in addition to his own solo performances and has since been involved in well over 80 LP and CD productions by other musicians. a. with Mikis Theodorakis , Georgeos Theodorakis, Maria Farantouri , Sema & Taksim, Zülfü Livaneli , Lauren Newton , Friedemann Witecka , Jocelyn B. Smith , the Klaus Gertken Trio, Volker Schlott Quartet and Silent Jazz Ensemble, Zoom, Human Factor, Animato, Die Elefanten, Pamagiera, Susanne Schönwiese ( Colors of Clay ) u. v. a.

Concert tours and festivals have taken Moritz to Belgium, Estonia, Italy, Austria, Sweden and Tunisia, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the Soviet Union, Turkey and the USA.

There were also joint tours and CDs. a. with Teo Macero (USA), Tiger Okoshi (Japan), Charlie Mariano (USA, Cologne), Nils Petter Molvær (Norway), Lauren Newton (USA), Ack van Rooyen (Netherlands), Ramesh Shotham (India), Reinhard Flatischler, Wolfgang Puschnig (Austria), Dudu Tucci (Brazil, Berlin), Les Percussions de Guinée (Guinea), Tuta Ngoma (Democratic Republic of the Congo), Zülfü Livaneli (Turkey), Wu Wei (Shanghai), Urna Chahartugi (Mongolia), Carlo Domeniconi , Friedemann Graef and Gebhard Ullmann .

Uli Moritz continues to live and work in Berlin.
