Ulli Weiss

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ulli Weiss (* 1943 in Bonn ; † July 5, 2014 in Wuppertal ) was a German photographer and longstanding artistic companion of the Wuppertal Pina Bausch dance theater .

Life

Ulli Weiss initially worked for several years as an employee for Deutsche Lufthansa AG in Bonn and Munich. In 1969/70 she went to the Folkwang University of Design in Essen as Otto Steinert's assistant . From 1971 to 1976 she studied photography and photojournalism with Steinert . During her studies she met the choreographer Pina Bausch (1940–2009) and has been friends with her ever since.

After graduating from Folkwang University, she worked as a freelance photographer, and began and completed a degree in theater studies and German studies. From 1976, at the beginning of dance theater , she took up rehearsals and performances by Pina Bausch's ensemble, which she continued until the end of her life. At that time, Weiss was the only photographer Bausch allowed to join the ensemble. Bausch included Weiss in the circle of the ensemble's closest employees and with her shaped the public image of the dance theater.

Weiss lived and worked in Wuppertal, where she died in July 2014 at the age of 71. In the obituary of the Wuppertal Pina Bausch dance theater it says:

“... that's why she had the right view of Pina Bausch's work from the start: reserved and precise at the same time. She knew how to capture both the aesthetics of dance theater and its emotionality, also in motion. The staging of her own perspective never dominated, rather she tried to open up the pieces from within. "
