Ulrich Magnus

Ulrich Magnus (born February 19, 1944 in Füssen ) is a German law scholar and former professor at the University of Hamburg .

Life

Magnus studied law at the universities of Berlin , Freiburg and Heidelberg . After his first state examination in Heidelberg, he worked there as a research assistant to Eduard Wahl , where he was awarded a Dr. iur. PhD. Magnus then worked as a research fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law in Hamburg with Konrad Zweigert . Under his supervision, he completed his habilitation in 1983 with a comparative legal thesis on tort law, for which Hein Kötz and Herbert Bernstein acted as experts.

From 1983 until his retirement in 2009, Magnus was Professor of Civil Law, Private International Law and Comparative Law at the University of Hamburg . At the same time he was the director of the seminar there for foreign and international private and procedural law. From 1995 to 2009 he also worked as a judge at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court in Hamburg . During his academic career, Magnus held various visiting professorships, including in Kyoto , London (UCL) , Lucerne , New York , St. Petersburg , Prague and Stellenbosch .

Magnus is also the German national correspondent at UNCITRAL and Director of the International Max Planck Research School for Maritime Affairs. He has also worked several times as a consultant and expert for the European Commission , the International Atomic Energy Agency and FIFA .

Magnus' research focuses in particular on contract and tort law as well as private international law. He is married and has five children, including Dorothea Magnus, visiting professor at the Free University of Berlin, and Robert Magnus, assistant professor at the University of Regensburg.
