Eduard Wahl (born March 29, 1903 in Frankfurt am Main ; † February 6, 1985 in Heidelberg ) was a German professor of law and politician of the CDU .

Life

Eduard Wahl was born in 1903 as the son of a rector. After attending school, he studied at the universities in Frankfurt , Heidelberg , Marburg and Paris . In 1923 he completed his doctorate with his work The Counterclaim brought in for the case of a lawsuit . He passed his assessor exam in 1927, then he worked at the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin for foreign and international private law. At the University of Berlin , he completed his habilitation in 1932 and then worked as a private lecturer. In 1935 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Göttingen . In 1941 he accepted the offer from Heidelberg University, which had offered him a chair in civil law . After the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler on July 20, 1944 , Wahl was drafted into the Wehrmacht due to political stress .

After the end of the Second World War , he became a professor again in 1946 at the University of Heidelberg, where he remained until his retirement in 1971. In the Nuremberg trial against IG Farben in 1947/1948, he held the defense mandate as a “special advisor for all defendants” and was also asked to act as an expert. In 1949 he initiated and coordinated the “ Heidelberger Juristenkreis ”. After leaving the Bundestag in 1969, he retired. He died in 1985, his estate is kept in the Archive for Christian Democratic Politics in Sankt Augustin.

His second marriage was to Klara von Heuss; their son Bernhard Wahl , born in 1949 , also became a lawyer.

Politics and parliamentary activities

Wahl joined the CDU in 1945 and became chairman of the Heidelberg district association in 1950. In the election to the first German Bundestag in 1949 , he was elected to parliament as a direct candidate in the Heidelberg constituency (later renamed the Heidelberg-Stadt constituency). In the first legislative period he was a full member of the committee for safeguarding the rights of the people's representation and for the occupation statute. He was also a deputy member of the Committee on Patent Law and Legal Protection. From March 1953 he was also a member of the Committee on Suffrage and the Committee on Legal Affairs and Constitutional Law, to which he also belonged in the second legislative term. In the first four terms, from 1949 to 1965, he was also a deputy member of the electoral review committee. In the second electoral term he was chairman of the Occupation Consequences Committee, in the third and fourth electoral terms he was a full member of the electoral review, immunity and rules of procedure committees. In the 1965 Bundestag election Wahl was re-elected to the Bundestag and, as since 1957, was a member of the Legal Affairs Committee. From 1968 until he left the Bundestag a year later, he was also chairman of the Committee for Economic Affairs and Development.

Wahl was also a member of the Assembly of the Western European Union and from 1953 to 1969 of the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe , of which he became Vice-President in 1966.
