Ulrich Wagener (* 1930 in Siegen ; † April 19, 2007 in Dortmund ) was a Roman Catholic priest and church historian .

education

After high school in his hometown studied Wagener Catholic theology in Paderborn and Munich and received on 17 December 1955 at the Great Cathedral in Paderborn by Archbishop Lorenz Jaeger , the ordination . After his first job as a vicar in the parish of St. Johann Evangelist in Winterberg - Siedlinghausen , he began teaching studies at the University of Cologne , which he completed in 1960 with the scientific state examination for teaching at secondary schools in the subjects of religion and history .

After completing this second degree , Wagener worked as a religion teacher in Hagen and Warburg until Archbishop Lorenz Cardinal Jaeger appointed him director of the higher technical college for religious education in Paderborn in 1968, which was soon converted into the institute for religious education. As head of this predecessor institution of the later department of theology, he made a significant contribution to the development of the Catholic University of Applied Sciences North Rhine-Westphalia, which was renamed the Catholic University of North Rhine-Westphalia on September 1, 2008 . In the 1972 winter semester, Wagener was appointed professor. As head of the Paderborn department and the theology department, he played a key role in the profile of the Catholic University of Applied Sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia as a church university. In 1992 Wagener gave up his professorship at his own request in order to devote himself entirely to his role as parish vicar of the parish of St. Kilian in Paderborn. From 1999 until his death, he volunteered as a chaplain in the St. Veronika nursing home in Paderborn.

Commission for Church History in the Archdiocese of Paderborn

Wagener was the initiator of the "Commission for Church History in the Archdiocese of Paderborn" and was appointed founding chairman in 1978 by Archbishop Johannes Joachim Degenhardt ; he headed the commission until 2005. In this area of ​​activity, Wagner became known primarily for his research results on the subject of “Priestly Life under National Socialism ” and the question of the deployment of foreign workers in church institutions between 1939 and 1945.

In 2005, Pope John Paul II made Wagener a Papal Honorary Chaplain .
