Ulrike Merten b. Hofberger (born December 13, 1951 in Bielefeld ) is a German politician ( SPD ).

From 2005 to 2009 she was chairwoman of the defense committee of the German Bundestag and is president of the Society for Security Policy .

Life and work

After attending primary school , Ulrike Merten completed an apprenticeship as a clerk and chemist from 1965 to 1968 . In this profession she worked until 1978, most recently as a department head.

Ulrike Merten is married and has two sons.

Political party

She has been a member of the SPD since 1972. From 1990 to 2001 she was a member of the SPD district committee in East Westphalia-Lippe and from 1992 to 2001 she was chairwoman of the SPD district association in Gütersloh . From 2000 to 2001 she was also the district chairwoman of the Working Group of Social Democratic Women (AsF) in Ostwestfalen-Lippe.

MPs

From 1994 to 1999 Ulrike Merten was a member of the district council of the Gütersloh district and was chairwoman of the advisory board for economic and employment promotion.

Since 1998 she has been a member of the German Bundestag . From October 2002 to May 2005 she was deputy spokeswoman for the working group on security issues of the SPD parliamentary group . Since May 2005 Ulrike Merten has been the chairman of the Defense Committee . She was not re-elected to the Bundestag on September 27, 2009.

Ulrike Merten has always entered the Bundestag via the state list of North Rhine-Westphalia .
