Umrao Jaan is a 2006 Hindi drama film directed by Jyoti Prakash Dutta . It is a remake of the 1981 film of the same name . It was first released on November 3, 2006 in India.

North India 1840, the eight year old Amiran is kidnapped by Dilawar Khan and brought to Faizabad . Dilawar was imprisoned on evidence from Amiran's father.

He kidnaps Amiran and sells them to a brothel in Lucknow , which is run by Khannum Jaan. She is adopted by Bua Hussaini and Maulvi Sahib. You treat her like their own daughter. In the company of Khurshid, Bismillah and Gauhar Mirza, Amiran learns the art of a courtesan .

The young girl transforms into an elegant beauty by the name of Umrao Jaan. Umrao's beauty casts its spell over Nawab Sultan. The two begin a passionate romance, but when his father finds out, he banishes Nawab Sultan from his life and denies him any wealth. The penniless Nawab goes to his uncle Nazimuddin in Grahi. Umrao prays daily for his return.

During his absence, Faiz Ali keeps an eye on Umrao and wants her at all costs. He asks her if she would like to accompany him to his house in Daulatabad . Umrao accepts, but only after learning that they are traveling through Grahi. After a confrontation between Faiz Ali's men and the soldiers of Grahi, the tour company including Umrao is arrested. Faiz Ali has been persecuted for years. Nawab Sultan hears that Umrao and Faiz Ali are in Grahi. He meets Ali in prison. Faiz Ali manipulates information about his time with Umrao, saying that they had a sexual relationship. Nawab confronts Umrao, he feels that she has betrayed him and sends her back to Lucknow.

Heartbroken, Umrao goes back to her old life, but fate has other plans for her. While drunk, Gauhar Mirza raped her. After the British attack on the city, she is forced to leave Lucknow. Before she does so, Gauhar pardons Mirza. She and the refugees split up after she decides to go to Faizabad.

Umrao goes to her childhood home and finds out that her father is dead. She meets her mother and brother, but they reject her because they learn about her job. Umrao is shunned by her family, lover, and society. She leaves Faizabad to go back to Lucknow, but on her way out of town she meets the man who kidnapped her and sold her to a brothel. Poor, homeless and injured, the man who does not recognize her asks for her pity and she forgives him. Shunned by everyone, she lives the rest of her days with her poems and fate in Lucknow.

  • Before Priyanka and Aishwarya, JP Dutta wanted Kareena Kapoor for the role of Umrao. But she dropped the role after a first meeting.
  • After that, the role of Umrao Jaan Priyanka Chopra was planned. But she had no time because she was busy filming Bluffmaster (2005).
  • Arshad Warsi was supposed to play the role of Gauhar Mirza, but he then made the film Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006) and Puru Raj Kumar took over the role.
  • The costumes in which Aishwarya sings and dances were auctioned for a charity prior to the film's release.
  • The jewelry worn in the film was real.
  • Aishwarya Rai had problems doing some dances because of the heavy costumes.
