chronology
Checkmate! Uncontrolled Feel

Uncontrolled is the tenth studio album by Japanese singer Namie Amuro . The album was released in Japan on June 27, 2012 and debuted in its first week at number 1 with 292,098 units sold on the Oricon charts in Japan.

Development into a studio album

While their ninth studio album Past <Future only had a single release, nine single releases on Uncontrolled , which were released between 2010 and 2012 , represent their position. That meant there were only four new songs, each with a music video. The conception of the album should be a collection of songs that Amuro likes to sing, and thus deviates from typical conceptions that are based on a theme. The concept was finalized in early 2012.

Of the nine single releases that were traditionally released in Japan before the studio album, all singles except Tempest and Yeah-Oh were certified for legal downloads by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ). Love Story even received a million award for one million legal downloads of ringtones , which corresponds to the diamond record . The song was also awarded a million in the legal downloads category. Love Story received the highest accolades since her song New Look , released in 2008 . Fight Together and Sit! Stay! Wait! Down! went platinum in the Legal Downloads category, while Break It , Get Myself Back , Naked, and Go Round all went gold.

Most of the songs were recorded in Prime Studio Form and also in Azabu O Studio , Avex Studio and Bunkamura Studio in Tokyo . Just Let's Go was recorded at the Record Plant in Los Angeles , United States . Amuro previously recorded songs in the Record Plant; so she was there for recordings for the studio albums Sweet 19 Blues (1996), Concentration 20 (1997) and Genius 2000 (2000).

production

Five tracks on the album were sung entirely in English ; In the Spotlight (Tokyo) , Hot Girls and Only You as new titles and Go Round and Yeah-Oh as newly sung complete translations of the original titles. For this purpose, the title was renamed to distinguish it from the original version from Go Round to Go Round ('n Round' n Round) and Yeah-Oh to Singing “Yeah-Oh” . In an interview, Amuro commented on the English titles on the album that they are not aimed at an international audience, but that she thought the songs would sound better in English.

Seven different producers worked on the album, including long-term colleagues Nao'ymt and T-SK again. Both producers worked on four songs each on the album. Nao'ymit, who has worked with Amuro since 2005 and produced the hits Baby Don't Cry and Hide and Seek , among others , produced the tracks Break It , Get Myself Back , Fight Together and Tempest on this album . T-SK, with whom Amuro has been cooperating since 2011, produced Love Story , Go Round , Yeah-Oh and Let's Go - these songs were all written by the Australian duo Nervo . Amuro worked on three other songs, In the Spotlight (Tokyo) , Hot Girls and Only You with the publisher Razor Boy Music Publishing, from Sweden , to which the Duo Nervo belonged. The three songs were produced in related order by Henrik Nordenback , Michael Smith and Peter Mansson . Songwriter Tiger wrote the Japanese lyrics for the songs Love Story and Let's Go , while the original version for Go Round was written by Aili and Yeah-Oh by Double . T. Kura and Michico worked on the song Sit! Stay! Wait! Down! , whereas the Japanese DJ Shin'ichi Ōsawa produced the song Naked and Verbal ( M-Flo ) wrote the lyrics for it.

Marketing and Publishing

Break It was in 2010 as the theme song for the campaign Wildheart to product variation Coca-Cola Zero from Coca-Cola in Japan used. The Japanese cosmetics company Kosé used Naked , Go Round and Hot Girls as theme songs for the Esprique eye make-up line. Amuro previously worked with Kosé in 2001, where a never-released English version of Say the Word was played in a commercial .

The song Fight Together was used as the third theme song of the 14th season of One Piece . Tempest was used as the theme song for the Japanese series of the same name and the two songs Sit! Stay! Wait! Down! and Love Story were used as theme songs for the Japanese series Watashi ga Ren'ai Dekinai Riyū ( 私 が 恋愛 で き な い 理由 ), in which Karina Nose , Yuriko Yoshitaka and AKB48 member Yuko Oshima star. In this 2011 aired series, Amuro also made a cameo on December 12, 2011 where she sang the theme song Love Story on stage.

For the European Football Championship 2012 , the song Only You was used as the theme song for broadcast on WOWOW in Japan. In addition, the television station published a documentary about Amuro entitled Namie Amuro 20th Anniversary Special: Live History & Document of Namie Amuro in two parts (on June 2, 2012 and November 3, 2012) and after this, on November 4, 2012, the Namie Amuro 20th Anniversary Concert will be broadcast live in Okinawa , but it didn't because the 20th Anniversary concert in Okinawa was canceled due to a typhoon. In this documentary series, artists were interviewed who were supposed to take part in the 20th anniversary concert, but also recordings from their tour of Asia were shown.

A mobile app related to Namie was released in May 2012 to promote Uncontrolled , the 2012 tour and, in general, their 20th anniversary on stage. The app was available in the App Store and Google Play .

In late May 2012, outside the Shinjuku train station in Tokyo, an eight-meter-high advertising poster was presented that took two days to set up and showed the album cover for Uncontrolled for the first time. In the background, the cover contained a recording of the solar eclipse on May 20, 2012 , which could be seen in Tokyo as a total solar eclipse . Amuro also visited radio stations in Fukuoka , Sapporo , Nagoya , Osaka and Kyoto . In Sapporo Station additional Namie Amuro-exhibition was on display in the Paseo department store.

Also in the magazines about Blenda , Gisele , Glamorous , Mina , S Cawaii! , Spring , Sweet and Vivi , Amuro was represented in the advertising campaign for Uncontrolled .

For further promotional activities, Amuro also traveled to Hong Kong , Singapore and Taiwan in late June, early July to promote the album. During this trip she gave several press conferences and club events, called Amuro Night , were held. However, she did not appear there, only at the St James Power Station club in Singapore, she took part in the event without performing.

Promo singles

The four new songs were also the promo singles. Only You reached # 7 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 due to the huge airplay in Japan.

In the Spotlight (Tokyo) was only released as a mobile download on July 4th of the same year. The song achieved the highest ranking # 46 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 two days earlier due to airplay.

Later on July 25th, Let's Go and Hot Girls were finally released as mobile downloads.

Music videos

With Uncontrolled , Amuro has released the largest collection of music videos for a single studio album. Seven music videos resulted from the single releases and four were newly shot.

  • Get Myself Back was filmed near her birthplace in Okinawa and was also her first film there. The scenery was chosen in contrast to the song.
  • Only You was filmed by American director Thomas Kloss in a desert near Los Angeles.
  • In the music video for Let's Go , a high-speed camera circling around a platform is used while Amuro and her dancers perform on the platform.

A music video compilation about Amuro was broadcast on Space Shower TV on June 23, 2012 . For July 2012 she was also advertised as Artist of the Month on MTV Japan .
