Une Misère is an Icelandic metalcore band from Reykjavík that was formed in 2016.

history

The band was founded in April 2016 by six musicians, each of whom had previously been active in a different band. In 2017 the first concerts and participation in the local Wacken Metal Battle followed. By winning this, the group took part in the Wacken Open Air . In the same year, the mixtape 010717 appeared , the title of which represented its release date. In the same year the group was represented at the Eistnaflug Festival , during which they held three concerts. In 2018 the band was represented at the Roadburn Festival and the Bloodshed Festival and they went on tour through Europe . In 2018 the band performed with Slayer at their only Icelandic concert. In January 2019 the group signed a record deal with Nuclear Blast . This year the band took part in Brutal Assault , Summer Breeze and the Metaldays , among others . In the summer the bands held performances in Europe along with Decapitated , Aborted , Arch Enemy and Lamb of God . At the beginning of November 2019, the debut album Sermon was released via Nuclear Blast . The writing process for this had started shortly after the 2017 Wacken Metal Battle, the recording and production had taken around three weeks. The recording work had started in the house of the drummer Benjamin Bent Árnason before it was taken over by Sky Van Hoff and his team consisting of Marco Bayati and Marco Kollenz . They also mixed the finished material before it was mastered by Svante Försbeck . On the album, the group consists of singer Jón Már Ásbjörnsson, guitarist Gunnar Ingi Jones, guitarist and singer Fannar Már Oddsson, bassist Þorsteinn Gunnar Friðriksson and drummer Benjamín Bent Árnason. In January and February 2020 the band went on tour through Europe with Fallujah , Bloodlet and Lowest Creature.

style

Isabell Raddatz from Rock Hard wrote in her review of Sermon that you can hear Hardcore Punk with influences from Death Metal . The songs are characterized by melancholy and groove . Despite several similarities in sound with Slipknot , the group manages to create an independent sound overall. An issue later, Raddatz found not only aural similarities to Slipknot, but also Korn . In an interview with her, Jón Már Ásbjörnsson stated that the band is influenced by numerous things. The clear vocals of the album were influenced by Arnór Dan Arnarson from Agent Fresco . The lyrics would be about mental illness and drug addiction , topics he sings about from personal experience. Celia Woitas from Metal Hammer stated in her review of the album that it contained "oppressive yet aggressive powerful sounds". This is an album, "that sometimes swirls around with nasty blastbeats in the chest, sometimes lulls into spherical darkness with a mixture of clear vocals and shouts ('Fallen Eyes') or confuses the minds with screaming guitars ('Failures')" . Overall, the band mixes aggressive elements from Black Metal with hardcore punk grooves, so that a "construct of frenzy, groove and melancholy" emerges. Sebastian Kessler also reviewed the album in the same issue. He assigned the album to metalcore. He also noticed the alternating use of clear vocals and shouts, but the band refrained from playing with this contrast. In addition, the group does not manage to create memorable melodies. Breakdowns and breakdrops are also characteristic of the songs.
