The United Nations Observer Mission in Liberia (UNOMIL, German: Observer Mission of the United Nations in Liberia ) is a closed observer mission of the United Nations to monitor the implementation of the Cotonou (Benin) Treaty of 1993 between the parties to the civil war . It was legitimized by the UN security resolutions 866 (1993) and 1020 (1995). It lasted from September 1993 to September 1997. It was the first United Nations peace mission to be carried out in cooperation with a peace mission from another organization ( ECOWAS Monitoring Group - ECOMOG). The exact separation between observer and peacekeeping missions cannot therefore be drawn in the UNOMIL case. The military responsibility lay with ECOMOG.

UNOMIL's mandate included monitoring the ceasefire, preventing the arms trade across national borders, observing parliamentary and presidential elections, ensuring humanitarian measures and the return of refugees and displaced persons.
