The United Nations Angola Verification Mission III (UNAVEM III) was after UNAVEM I and UNAVEM II , the third of three successive peacekeeping missions of the United Nations in Angola to the local civil war to end.

This mission began on February 1, 1995 and ended on June 30, 1997.

UNAVEM III had a strength of 7,000 soldiers and military support forces, 350 military observers, 260 police observers, 420 civilian employees and 300 local forces.

tasks

The central task of UNAVEM III was to support the civil war parties MPLA and UNITA in the implementation of their peace treaties of May 31, 1991, the Lusaka Protocol of November 20, 1994 and the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council. In order to guarantee good management (was good offices ) and the constant balance between the parties required to observe the construction of a new state administration in Angola and to verify to monitor the ceasefire, to monitor and ensure the unbundling of the troops of the warring factions to check all information from MPLA and UNITA about their troops, to help with the withdrawal of UNITA and to set up collection points for UNITA fighters, as well as to demobilize them, to form government troops and barracks, the free movement of people and goods in the country, to monitor the neutrality of the Angolan police and to guarantee the security of UNITA. In addition, UNAVEM III supported the humanitarian measures in Angola, the clearing of the mines and the recent elections.
