The United Nations Angola Verification Mission I (UNAVEM I) was a consecutive three peacekeeping missions of the United Nations in Angola . It was followed by UNAVEM II and UNAVEM III .

prehistory

Since Angola's independence in 1975, a civil war ravaged the country. The attempt by Portugal to conceive a peaceful transition to independence with the talks in Alvor in Portugal failed. The fighting continued. The parties were: Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola (MPLA), Frente Nacional da Libertação de Angola (FNLA) and União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola (UNITA). The military importance of the FNLA quickly waned and MPLA, supported by the Soviet Union and Cuba, and UNITA, supported by the United States and the Republic of South Africa , fought one of the typical proxy wars of the Cold War .

With the foreseeable end of the Cold War in 1988, the civil war in Angola was deprived of the breeding ground. The Cuban troops could no longer hold out in Angola in the face of growing political pressure and dwindling supplies of weapons.

development

The mission was established in 1988 by UN Security Council Resolution 626 at the request of the governments of Angola and Cuba. The task of UNAVEM I was to verify the withdrawal of Cuban troops to the north and their subsequent complete withdrawal from Angola in accordance with the agreements made by both governments. This withdrawal was completed on May 25, 1991, a month ahead of schedule. On June 6, 1991, the UN Secretary General reported to the UN Security Council that UNAVEM I had fully accomplished its mission.

UNAVEM I was commanded by Brigadier General Péricles Ferreira Gomes from Brazil . The headquarters were in Luanda .
