action

Tokyo in the present. Mitsuko is an inconspicuous, lonely employee in her thirties, who is satisfied and optimistic about her existence. The humble clerk loves the simplicity of things, despite social and professional ambitions. One day the restrained woman is noticed by the always grim businessman Eiji, who is wooing her somewhat clumsily. The two different characters eventually become a couple.

However, the common happiness does not want to set in as a result. Mitsuko feels uncomfortable apart from her staid clothes and familiar surroundings. The success-oriented IT entrepreneur somehow doesn't fit into her quiet and humble life. When she tells Eiji about her feelings, she runs into a lack of understanding. The social difference makes them doubt. The relationship falls apart.

A little later, Mitsuko met her neighbor Hiroshi, a shy 28-year-old warehouse worker from simple living conditions. The man immediately exerts a certain fascination on her. Mitsuko hopes to have found an ambitious soul mate. The love is tarnished, however, by a nightly visit of the spurned Eiji. The presence of the successful and self-confident rival changes Hiroshi permanently. Driven by feelings of inferiority, he withdraws self-pityingly, Mitsuko's affection not certain. The taciturn laborer envies Eiji's lifestyle because he mistakenly thinks he has to offer more to his loved ones. Disputes arise. Mitsuko's illusion of having found a kindred spirit is shattered. In the end, she fights for Hiroshi's love with tears. When the chosen one independently reflects on his reason, nothing stands in the way of a happy togetherness.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films writes that Unloved is a “radical study of an outdated character, which fascinates with its extremely reduced, contemplative imagery”. The staging is "psychologically finely spun and, as an alternative to the development paradigm of modernity, not without culturally critical undertones". Furthermore, the film is said to be particularly impressive because of its “cinematic qualities”.

In its online edition, the film magazine Cinema describes the work as a “precise portrait of an unusual heroine”.

Harald Peters dedicates himself to the “problem of total satisfaction” in the taz . The director raises "questions of philosophical importance" which the characters have to play through as in a "laboratory experiment". Consequently, Manda's characters act “like a board game” through “pleasantly simple backdrops”.
