Bollard pull 285 tons (approx. 2,795 kN )

The ALP Guard was put into service as Uranus . It is the most powerful ever built in Germany for German clients anchor handling tug (AHT, Eng. Anchor Handling Tug ). In the summer of 2010, the sister ship Orcus was put into service.

history

In order to be able to meet the increased demands in salvage operations and in crude oil production in the offshore area, the shipping company Harms Bergung, which is active in this sector, needed powerful deep-sea tugs with a bollard pull of at least 280 tons (around 2750 kN). Against this background, MAN Ferrostaal (logistics, project management) and Mützelfeldtwerft (shipbuilding) were commissioned with the implementation. The Hitzler shipyard based in Lauenburg / Elbe was responsible for the design .

In autumn 2007, the Uranus was laid down as hull number 256 at the Mützelfeldtwerft in Cuxhaven. On August 31, 2008, the floating dock was flooded. Due to technical problems, the test drives could only be carried out in August / September 2009. The bollard pull tests took place on October 7, 2009 in Stavanger . Since stability problems arose during the test drives, it was decided to equip the Uranus with additional buoyancy boxes amidships. This measure was carried out in the summer of 2010 at the shipyard.

The Uranus was christened on November 21, 2009 by Sigrid Albrecht, wife of one of the two owners. Initially, the ship was owned by the holding companies AHT URANUS and AHT ORCUS, and the tug was managed by Harms Salvage, Transport and Heavylift . In spring 2015, the two sister ships were sold to the Dutch shipping company ALP Maritime Services . The Uranus was renamed ALP Guard after the sale , while the Orcus was renamed ALP Center .

Technology and equipment

Machine system and drive

In accordance with its task, the ALP Guard is equipped with a very powerful machine and drive system. Four nine-cylinder in-line engines from the MaK M32C series are used as the main engines . Each engine develops an output of 4500 kW (6120 hp) at a speed of 600 rpm. Two motors each work via Wärtsilä TCH270-S58 type couplings and gears on Lips 4-blade controllable pitch propellers with a diameter of 4.52 m. The propellers run in fixed Kort nozzles ; their nominal speed is 122 rpm. The motors can be coupled or uncoupled as required.

With these propulsion systems, the tractor achieves a maximum continuous bollard pull of 285 tons (around 2795 kN ) with continuous engine power ( Maximum Continuous Rating , MCR) , at 110% machine power it can briefly reach 301 tons (about 2950 kN). The maximum speed of the Uranus is around 18 knots, the service speed is 12 knots.

For the power supply, the Uranus has two shaft generators flanged to the gearboxes, each with an output of 2000 kW. They can be switched on and off via couplings. There are also two additional diesel generators.

To ensure a good maneuverability, the tractor is equipped with three Schottel - transverse thrusters equipped. They work with electrically driven controllable pitch propellers. The two systems in the bow (STT 4 CP) each have an output of 1200 kW, the stern transverse thruster (STT 1 CP) has an output of 400 kW.
