Urs Kälin (politician)

Urs Kälin (born September 24, 1959 in Altdorf UR ; legal resident in Einsiedeln ) is a Swiss historian and politician ( SP ).

Life

Urs Kälin grew up in Andermatt and Altdorf UR . He attended the Altdorf Primary School and the Uri Cantonal Middle School , which he completed in 1979 with the Matura Type C. He then studied general history, modern German literature and political science at the University of Zurich . After the Licentiate (1984), he received his doctorate in 1991 under Professor Rudolf Braun (historian) with a thesis on the Urner upper classes in the 18th and 19th centuries. After graduating, Urs Kälin worked as a secondary school teacher, on the inventory of historical traffic routes in Switzerland and between 1992 and 1996 as a research assistant at the Swiss University Conference in Bern. Since 1996 he has been deputy director of the Swiss Social Archives in Zurich. Urs Kälin is the author of numerous scientific publications, in particular on the social history of the Old Confederation and the history of the labor movement and work. Urs Kälin is married and has three grown children.

Political career

Kälin was politicized in the anti-nuclear movement in the late 1970s . He then got involved with the Uri committee for real community service and between 1985 and 1992 on the board of the Uri section of the Swiss Transport Club . Kälin has been a member of the Swiss Social Democratic Party since 1991 . From 2001 to 2010 he was president of the SP Altdorf section and from 1998 to 2010 a member of the management of the Uri cantonal party. From 1998 to 2010 Kälin was a member of the Cantonal Matura Commission. In November 2009 he was elected to the Altdorf municipal council, from 2013 to 2014 he was the municipality's vice-president. Urs Kälin has been mayor of the capital of the canton of Uri since 2015 . In June 2019, the SP nominated Uri Kälin as a candidate for the National Council .
