Ursula Schwaller (born June 22, 1976 in Freiburg im Üechtland ) is a Swiss athlete and architect . She is a multiple cycling world champion in disabled sports.

Life

Schwaller grew up with two siblings on her parents' farm in Heitiwil and spent a lot of time in nature and on the bike. After spending a year abroad in Sweden as an au pair and graduating from high school, she completed her apprenticeship as an architect FH / HES in Freiburg.

On December 8, 2002, Ursula Schwaller had an accident on a snowshoe tour and has been paralyzed since then . At the Swiss Paraplegic Center in Nottwil, she was prepared for her new life as a wheelchair user. During her rehabilitation, she already trained on a borrowed handbike . Only a few weeks after leaving Nottwil, she contested her first handbike race. Schwaller celebrated successes in disabled sports as a cyclist (from 2003) and as a rower (from 2013). She also operates the disciplines of alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and kayaking.

In 2006 Schwaller built the first zero-energy house in the canton of Friborg , which she lives in herself. Ursula Schwaller has been a board member of the Denk an mich Foundation since 2013 .

Cycling

Ursula Schwaller has been an active handbiker since 2003 (UCI category WH2). The athlete at Veloclub Kerzers was part of the Swiss national handbike team between 2009 and 2012. Schwaller is multiple world champion in road races, individual time trials and team relay and holds the world best time for female hand bikers (WH2) over the marathon distance (1:09:49). In 2015 Schwaller was the first female paraplegic to complete the 300 km long Vätternrundan in 12 hours and 17 minutes, breaking the previous record for a man by almost two hours. In 2016, she was also the first paraplegic to challenge the 543 km long Styrkeprøven in a time of 24:44:11 hours. In 2017 she was the first wheelchair athlete to be included in the official ranking of the Mallorca 312 in a time of 8:05:51 hours over the 167 km distance.

From 2013 onwards, Schwaller was the first licensed Swiss rower to compete in international para rowing competitions in the ASW1x boat class (women's single with arms and shoulders). Schwaller immediately became an indoor rowing European champion and achieved 5th place when she first participated in the Rowing World Cup on Dorney Lake in Eton (GBR). In 2013, Schwaller was the first female para rower to take part in the two long-distance regattas Armadacup and Silverskiff.
