Ursuline Convent Graz in Leonhardstrasse

The Ursuline Convent Graz on Leonhardstraße in the second district of St. Leonhard houses the Ursuline Convent on the one hand, and a mixed-gender private school with different school types on the other. The monumental building was built in the style of late historicism .

history

Due to the population growth in downtown Graz and the resulting narrowness, a piece of land was acquired in the suburb of St. Leonhard in 1891. The buyer was Prince-Bishop Johann Zwerger . The construction project did not begin until September 1898, with the shell being completed just a few months later, in January 1899. One year later, after the premises were completed, the Ursuline convent moved from Sackstrasse to Leonhardstrasse .

The sisters ran an elementary school, a community school, which could be continued in the First World War . According to the school chronicle, the most significant event since the school was founded in 1930 took place when a humanistic girls' high school was opened. The management of the school was also passed from the nuns to a lay direction. As early as 1937/38, most of the religious sisters were banned from exercising their activities in schools and boarding schools. They had to do their work in other European Ursuline monasteries.

After the building served as a state high school during the Second World War and in the post-war period , for four years as a reserve hospital, SS hospital, and later as a Russian barracks and prisoner of war camp, the British Red Cross also moved into the premises. Due to the varied use, the furniture and the building fabric were badly damaged, sold or destroyed. The sisters finally managed to find part of the facility again and equip the school with the essentials.

As early as mid-October 1946, the school was opened with three different types (elementary school, secondary school and housekeeping school). A year later a teacher training college was added. In autumn 1948 the exterior renovation of the school and convent building was completed. In 1950 all types of schools that had been in operation until 1938 were represented again. Today the Ursulines house a kindergarten, a primary school, a secondary school with a new middle school and a grammar school. Boys have also been admitted to school since the 2008/2009 school year.

Architecture and design

Monastery building

The four-storey building block was built by Johann Guido Wolf between 1898 and 1900 according to the plans of the architect Josef Schmalzhofer . The facade design was carried out in neo-baroque styles. There are pavilions at the corners of the house. The west wing was subsequently increased. In the stairwell there is a mosaic of St. Ursula , which was laid by Gernot Jüttner. A Mariahilf grace picture (1768) in the style of De Pomis can be seen in the procurature, as well as the late baroque furniture.

A carved figure depicting the enthroned Mary with child (17th century) is in the reception room. In the refectory you can see a grandfather clock and paintings with scenes around "Christ and the Samaritan", the "refreshment of Christ through angels", the "version of St. Angela ", the founder of the order "Angela with the cross" and St. Augustine.

Exam

In the novitiate there is an altar cabinet from the years 1740/45. On the wing retable there are carved wooden figures of Maria Immaculata and the two saints Joachim and Joseph, which were made in the manner of Joseph Schocktnigg. The insides of the wings are decorated with pictures of Saints Ursula, Agnes, Katharina and Barbara, while the representation of the Trinity is on the upper picture. A pietà group from the 17th century stands in front of a crucifix . In the corridors you can see a niche with a mount of Olives (17th century), two late Gothic candlestick angels (around 1430) and some paintings with various depictions of saints.

Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity

The house chapel, which is dedicated to the Holy Trinity , is in the south wing. After removing the former neo-renaissance interior fittings, the chapel room was redesigned in 1963 according to the designs of the artist Franz Maitz. The two-storey hall with arched windows consists of four bays and a flat ceiling, a single-bay choir and a single-bay organ gallery. The furnishings include a hanging crucifix, a tabernacle and an organ (1975) from the Walcker company from Ludwigsburg . In front of the chapel entrance there is a wooden figure of St. Catherine (17th / 18th century).

On the north side of the chapel is the Marienkapelle with mirrored ceiling and flat arched window. On the columnar altar (17th century) there is an altar sheet with representations of Maria Immaculata and an upper image of St. Joseph. In the prayer choir, which is hidden behind the choir of the chapel, hangs a painting of the protective cloak Ursula, which was painted by Franz Carl Remp. A group of crosses with St. Ursula, a wooden figure of St. Barbara and late baroque furniture can also be found in the prayer choir.
