description

Urtica atrovirens grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 30 to 80 centimeters. A rhizome is formed as a permanent organ. The constantly against arranged on the stem leaves are divided into petiole and leaf blade. The petiole is 1 to 8 cm long. The simple leaf blade has a diameter of 2 to 7 cm and is egg-shaped to rounded, rarely lanceolate with a heart-shaped blade base. The leaf margin is serrated. The leaf blade is lined with stinging hairs about 2.5 to 3 mm long . The two free stipules are lanceolate.

Urtica atrovirens is monoecious ( monoecious ). The racemose inflorescences arise in pairs in the leaf axils and, with lengths of 1 to 6 cm, are usually longer than the petiole. The unisexual flowers are small, greenish and radial symmetry . The male flowers contain four stamens . The female flowers contain an upper ovary . The ellipsoidal achenes are average in size with a length of 1 mm and a width of 0.8 mm.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 24 or 26.

Occurrence

Urtica atrovirens occurs in the western Mediterranean region. Their distribution area extends from the Balearic Islands ( Menorca ), Sardinia and Corsica over the Tuscan Archipelago to Italy ( Tuscany ).
