Usedom's Mellenthin Botanical Garden

Usedom's Botanical Garden Mellenthin is a private collection of more than 1000 different hardy plants on the Baltic Sea island of Usedom .

General

The botanical garden can be traced back to a purely private initiative. Therefore, the recreational component of a botanical garden is presented in it, the scientific one, regardless of which a contribution to environmental education is made through the plant labeling in Latin , German and Polish . Since the beginning of the planting in October 2006, more than 50,000 plants (excluding the spring- flowering bulbs) have been planted in an area of ​​60,000 square meters. The collection of plants in this botanical garden is not, as is usually the case, arranged according to their origin, but rather according to their system. The locations of the individual plants were determined by the natural conditions of the re-planned arable land and accordingly embedded in the location. A total of 750 tons of natural stones or field stones were also placed in Usedom's Mellenthin Botanical Garden for arrangement and distribution.

Arrangement of the garden

Usedom's Botanical Garden consists of 14 individual gardens. Almost all of the individual gardens are surrounded by hedges, so that they can only be viewed individually and so the "individual garden experience" is only triggered when the viewer enters the respective subject area.

The green garden

It mainly contains a collection of conifers and some evergreen ground cover . There are also approx. 8000 tulips ( Tulipa ) [IV - V], azaleas ( rhododendron ) [V], ground cover roses ( Rosa ) [VI - X] and bell heather ( Erica tetralix ) [IX - XI]. This single garden is delimited by a hedge made from privet ( Ligustrum vulgare ) [VI - VII].

The early flower garden

Here you will mainly find perennials that have their flowering phases in late spring and early summer. In addition, chestnuts are planted here , which should develop like a natural roof over the interior of this garden. To the south of the garden is through a hedge of astilbe ( spiraea vanhouttei ) - deferred and to the north by a flowering hedge [V VI]. In addition, this garden blooms with innumerable hyacinths ( Hyacinthus ) [III - IV].

The rose garden

The rose garden shows more than 100 different roses ( pink ), which are underplanted with ground cover plants and ground cover roses. The individual rose beds are delimited with boxwood ( Buxus sempervirens ), the rose garden is fenced in with a field maple hedge ( Acer campestre ).

The late flower garden

In addition, countless snowdrops ( Galanthus ) [II - IV], Märzenbecher ( Leucojum vernum ) [III - IV] and crocuses ( Crocus ) [II - IV] bloom here .

The garden on the slope

Three field stone terraces form the core element of this flower garden. This garden is characterized by a balanced weighting of “early” and “late” flowering perennials. More than 150 clematis ( Clematis ) [VI - IX], and more than 250 carpets and upholstery Phlox ( Phlox subulata ) - beranken the stone terraces from below and above [V VI]. In addition, there is a colorful mix of spring flowers in this garden. The garden on the slope is delimited by green hedge barberry ( Berberis thunbergii ) [V].

The lawn

The lawn is surrounded by wild lilacs ( Syringa vulgaris ) [V], hornbeam ( Carpinus betulus ) and copper beech ( Fagus sylvatica purpurea ).

The mixed forest

The naturally grown piece of forest is accessible and has not changed in its authenticity. The semicircular edge of the forest provides plenty of shade and is also home to some native birds.

The kitchen garden

The kitchen garden is home to the most common fruit trees and fruit bushes that are native to the region . B. Apple ( Malus ), pear ( Pyrus ), cherry ( Prunus cerasus ), peach ( Prunus persica ) etc. The flowering season in spring in this garden area is particularly worth seeing. A small vineyard with a wide variety of vines ( Vitis ) [V - VI] can also be seen here. The heather garden

The rhododendron garden

The alpine rose ( rhododendron ) blooms in May every year . The rhododendron plants planted in 2007 are still a long way from reaching their final height of 2 - 5 m. To increase the flowering time this individual garden, the Rhododendrenbeete are partially planted with summer flowering ground cover, as well as with hydrangea ( Hydrangea ) [VII - IX] and Garteneibisch ( Hibiscus ) [VI - IX].

The ornamental shrub garden

In order to minimize the use of chemical garden care products, the natural help of birds has been relied on, especially for pest control. This and the different shapes and colors of ornamental shrubs were the motivation to create them in the garden.

The pond / water plant garden

The second smallest garden area is the pond and aquatic plant garden. It shows both aquatic and bank plants . From here a separate path leads to the built walk-on wall, which allows a view from an elevated perspective over the entire garden. This wall ends in the rock garden.

The rock garden
