Banerjee graduated from the University of Delhi a Bachelor in Chemistry , at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur a Master in physical chemistry and in 1984 at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has a Ph.D. in chemistry. As a postdoctoral fellow he worked with Seymour Benzer at Caltech, where he began his work on the neurobiology of Drosophila . Banerjee has been a faculty member at UCLA since 1988. In 1990 he became a research fellow of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellow ).

Utpal Banerjee studies the development of the eye and the hematopoietic system in Drosophila . Other works deal with the metabolism of cancer cells or the embryonic development of mice.

Banerjee earned itself above all by introducing numerous young students to scientific work. He has published works with hundreds of first and second year students as co-authors in renowned journals. Since 2002, Banerjee has also been doing research for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute , where he also conducts large-scale series of studies with the independent collaboration of numerous students ( e.g. the Undergraduate Research Consortium in Functional Genomics , URCFG). For his achievements as an academic teacher, Banerjee has received several awards, including the 2010 Elizabeth W. Jones Award for Excellence in Education from the Genetics Society of America .

In 2008 Utpal Banerjee became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 2009 a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and in 2018 a member of the National Academy of Sciences .

Banerjee is married and has two children.
