Zygomorphic flower

Appearance, leaf and trap

Utricularia subulata grows as an annual herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 5 to 25 centimeters.

The alternate leaves are arranged in a petiole and a leaf blade. The simple, single-veined leaf blade is linear with a length of 1 to 2 centimeters and a width of about 0.5 millimeters. The very numerous, stalked traps are round or egg-shaped with a diameter of 0.2 to 0.5 millimeters.

Inflorescence and flower

The upright inflorescence stem is tiny papillae in the lower area and smooth in the upper area. The racemose inflorescences have a diameter of 0.3 to 0.6 millimeters and contain many (2 to usually about 10, rarely up to 25) flowers. The inflorescence axis is usually wavy or zigzag shaped. The bracts include the flower stalks, are shield-shaped or round, smooth and 0.75 to 1 millimeter long. Cover sheets are missing. The ascending flower stalks are 2 to 10 millimeters long, the distances between the flower stalks are a little larger than they are.

The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic and five-fold with a double flower envelope . Kleistogamous flowers are also often formed. The two almost identical calyx lobes are egg-shaped with a length of about 1 millimeter wide with a pointed or truncated upper end and indistinctly five-nerved. The yellow corolla measures 6 to 10 millimeters, with cleistogamous flowers 2 millimeters. The upper lip is broadly ovate with a rounded upper end and about 2–3 times as long as the upper calyx lobe. The lower lip, which is circular in outline, is deeply three-lobed. The straight, awl-shaped spur runs parallel to the lower lip and is about the same length. The two stamens have a thread-like stamen. The unicameral ovary is spherical. The stylus is very short.

Fruit and seeds

The fruit stalks are upright. The spherical capsule fruit with a diameter of 1 to 1.5 millimeters opens on the belly through an egg-shaped pore and releases numerous seeds. The approximately 0.2 millimeter large, egg-shaped seeds are longitudinally grooved and wingless.

Chromosome number

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 30.

Occurrence

Utricularia subulata is pantropically widespread. The wide distribution area includes the eastern USA and California via Mexico , Central America and the Caribbean islands to the southern part of South America, tropical Africa and Madagascar , Portugal , Assam , Thailand , Malaya , Borneo and the Australian states of Northern Territory and Queensland . Utricularia subulata grows on wet or occasionally flooded sandy or peat soils.
