Uwe Niesig (born June 17, 1960 in Dresden ) is a German artist of light installations and design and is one of the leading international representatives in his field.

Born in Dresden, Uwe Niesig completed his music studies with Werner Zeibig at the University of Music in Dresden and completed international master classes a. a. with Ludwig Streicher in Vienna. He then received his artistic tools as a lighting technician (due to an occupational ban by the SED regime at the time ), intern , assistant and lighting designer . He worked u. a. with Ruth Berghaus , Joachim Herz , Wolfgang Engel and Harry Kupfer , also under Achim Freyer in his production of Philip Glass ' Einstein on the Beach and with Götz Friedrich at the Württemberg State Theater in Stuttgart .

He perfected his skills as a light artist with the leading representatives of this field, such as Friedewald Degen at the Semperoper, Peter Schaffert in Munich, Hanns-Joachim Haas in Stuttgart and Manfred Voss at the Bayreuth Festival. From there, Harry Kupfer and Hans Schavernoch signed him to the Komische Oper Berlin . He was u. a. the first theater designer who implemented an entire lighting concept exclusively with the then still new moving lights ( clay paky ), for example in 1991 for the Struwwelpeter production with texts by Friedrich Nietzsche in Munich . Since then he has also worked as an internationally sought-after lighting designer, set designer and theater manager. Since 2017 he has been the technical director, equipment director and lighting designer at the Landestheater Niederbayern.

Uwe Niesig has also worked as a director with leading German-speaking actors since 1995 . Uwe Niesig made his directorial debut with Thornton Wilders Our Town with Siegfried Lowitz in the leading role in Cordula Trantow's Weilheimer Theatersommer . As an opera director, he staged the Austrian premiere of Nino Rota's Il cappello di paglia di Firenze at the Vienna Chamber Opera in 2001 . In 2018 he took over the light design for the ballet Electra in the choreography by Renato Zanella and on the music by Mikis Theodorakis at the Festival of the Aegean on the Greek island of Syros.

Uwe Niesig has already participated in over 100 productions, including a. at the Semperoper and the Dresden State Theater, the Württemberg State Theater in Stuttgart, the State Theater on Gärtnerplatz in Munich, the Prince Regent Theater in Munich, at the Bayreuth Festival, the Rheinsberg Castle Theater or at the Komische Oper Berlin.
