Athletic career

In 1974 Uwe Pohl was accepted into the youth team of FC Carl Zeiss Jena, the soccer training center in the GDR district of Gera . He played his first men's games from the 1978/79 season on in the junior league . There he played for FC Carl Zeiss for four seasons, in which he was used as a regular player mainly in midfield. In the second half of the 1981/82 season Pohl was added to the squad of the league team, with which he played four point games by the end of the season. He was in the starting line-up three times as a left defender, and played the match on the 16th match day between FCC and BSG Wismut Aue (4-0) over the full length of the game. Pohl had his most successful Jena league season in 1982/83, when he was called up 16 times in the 26 league games. On the 19th matchday he scored the 4-1 final score in the match between FCC and FC Hansa Rostock , his only league goal for Jena. He was also used in September 1982 in the UEFA Cup game Girondins Bordeaux - FCC (5-0), in which the Jena were eliminated in the first round, as a left defender. In the following two seasons Pohl fell out of the player base and only came to five league games. In the 1984/85 season he was called up with nine missions in the second-rate GDR league team FCC II than in the major league. At the end of this season, Uwe Pohl was dismissed after 30 league games (1 goal) at FC Carl Zeiss Jena.

For the 1985/86 season Uwe Pohl moved to the top division Sachsenring Zwickau. In Zwickau he immediately found his place again as a regular in the defense. When he had to replace the absent striker Martin Trocha as a center forward in the match between FC Vorwärts Frankfurt and BSG Sachsenring (3-1) on matchday 14 , Pohl scored the only Zwickau goal, which was also his only league goal this season. At the end of the season, the BSG Sachsenring was determined to be relegated, and in the following two seasons Pohl joined the Zwickauers in the GDR league. In the GDR league season 1986/87 Pohl played the first 13 point games, then he was drafted for 18 months for military service in the National People's Army . After his release he was able to play four league games at the end of the season 1987/88 and celebrate the return to the league with his team. In his second league season in Zwickau he took back his regular place in defense in 1988/89 and was used in 25 of the 26 league games. He also scored his second Zwickau league goal. However, he could not prevent the renewed relegation to the GDR league. Until 1991, Pohl played second class with FSV Zwickau. In the 1989/90 season he was used in 31 of the 34 league games, scored four goals and played for the first time continuously as a libero . From the 4th to the 7th matchday, Pohl also worked as a player- coach after Udo Schmuck had been dismissed as a coach.

Pohl played his last second division season in 1990/91 in the newly founded NOFV league . There were 30 point games to be completed in which Pohl, still playing as a Libero, only missed one game. FSV Zwickau ended the season as the first in the season and took part in the qualifying round for the 2nd Bundesliga . Among the four participants, the Zwickau only came third and thus missed the promotion. Of the six qualifying games, Pohl only played one encounter in which he was only substituted on in the 37th minute. Until 1994 Uwe Pohl played in the third or fourth class Oberliga Nordost , most recently at Chemnitzer FC .
