Västlänken ( German  West Connection ) is a planned railway project for commuter and regional trains in the tunnel under the center of the Swedish city Gothenburg . This should make it easier to reach goals within Gothenburg and western Sweden.

Five regional traffic lines are to run on the route every 15 minutes (during rush hour) (otherwise 30 minutes).

Technical planning

The double-track line is about eight kilometers long, six kilometers of which run in the tunnel. The tunnel will have a new underground station below Gothenburg's central station and the new Korsvägen and Haga tunnel stops. Preparations for construction began in 2016, construction started in 2018, and commissioning is Template: future / in 5 yearsscheduled for 2026 . Five main construction contracts are to be put out to tender for the project.

The capacity of the Gothenburg terminus is considered exhausted at peak hour. The main station is to be supplemented by four underground tracks on two platforms. The Haga and Korsvägen stations will be prepared from the outset for later expansion to four tracks.

The planning process close to the people was praised many times. The project is to be financed from the city's city toll . According to a report by Göteborgs-Posten , the calculated costs increased from 300 million euros in 1989 to 2.3 billion euros in 2009. Trafikverket estimates the construction costs at 20 billion crowns at the price level of 2009.

The line is to be equipped with ETCS .

construction

The Swedish Regional and Environmental Court (Mark- och miljööverdomstolen) ruled on May 14, 2018 that construction work can already begin, although the appeals proceedings have not yet been judged. The first groundbreaking for the project took place on May 30, 2018.

opponent

The Stoppa Västlänken action alliance, founded in 2007, has spoken out against the construction of the Västlänken . The coalition justifies your initiative by stating that, in your opinion, there is no national interest in the tunneling project. In addition, according to current planning, the entire structure is already occupied by local trains to such an extent that it cannot accommodate either freight trains or other long-distance trains.

In elections in September 2018, a party that was solely committed to halting the Västlänken project received enough seats on the Gothenburg city council to jeopardize the project's implementation.

Planning the stations

Central

The new Centralen station will have two platforms with four tracks. It will be built north of today's main train station.

Haga

The station will be about 25 meters below the surface of the earth. 17,000 residents have a ten-minute walk from their apartment to the train station. About 36,000 people work in the area of the train station.

Korsvagen

Korsvägen is an important hub in Gothenburg's public transport network. Världskulturmuseet , Universeum , Liseberg , Svenska Mässan , Valhalla and Scandinavium are close to the train station. 14,000 residents have a ten-minute walk from their apartment to the train station. Around 20,000 people work in the area of the train station.
