Valentin von Ratibor (also Valentin von Troppau-Ratibor ; Valentin the Hunchback ; Czech: Valentin Hrbatý ; * around 1485 ; †  November 13, 1521 ) was from 1493 to 1506 together with his brothers Nikolaus VI. and Johann IV. Duke of (Troppau) -Ratibor and thereafter until his death in 1521 sole Duke of (Troppau) -Ratibor. He came from the Troppau-Ratibor family branch of the Troppauer Přemyslids , of which he was the last member.

Life

His parents were Johann III. of Ratibor and Magdalena († 1501), a daughter of the Opole Duke Nikolaus I.

After the death of their father, Valentin and his brothers Nicholas VI inherited. and Johann IV. the Duchy (Troppau) -Ratibor, which they administered together.

After Valentin's older brothers both died in 1506, Valentin was the sole ruling Duke of (Troppau) -Ratibor. In 1511 he recognized the inheritance contract concluded by his father in 1478 with the Opole Duke Johann II , which had been confirmed by King Matthias Corvinus at the time . However, after Valentin received the right to freely choose his successor from the Bohemian King Vladislav II in the same year , a new inheritance contract was concluded in 1512, which was confirmed by King Vladislav II. After that, in the case of Johann's childless death, the Duchy of Opole was to be divided between Valentin von (Troppau) -Ratibor and Georg von Brandenburg . With Valentin's childless death, a transfer of the Duchy (Troppau) -Ratibor to Johann II of Opole was planned.

Valentin was not married and left no offspring. With his death in 1521, the Troppau-Ratibor tribe of the Troppauer Přemyslids died out, and he was the last of all Přemyslids. His body was buried in the Dominican church in Ratibor. As a sign that he was the last of his tribe, his ritually broken sword was placed on his coffin.

His duchy (Troppau) -Ratibor fell according to the inheritance contract of 1512 to John II of Opole, who combined the two duchies to form the Duchy of Opole-Ratibor .
