Johann III. von Ratibor (also: Johann IV. von Ratibor ; Czech: Jan V. Ratibořský ; * around 1446 ; † 14 May 1493 ) was Duke of Ratibor from 1456 until his death in 1493 . He came from the Troppau-Ratibor family of the Troppauer Přemyslids .

Life

His parents were Wenzel von Ratibor and Margareta von Szamotuły († 1464), a daughter of the Meseritzer Kastelans Vincent von Szamotuły.

Johann III. was the only son of Duke Wenceslas of Ratibor and inherited the Duchy of Ratibor after his death in 1456. Like his cousins ​​from the Jägerndorfer line, Johann IV. Ä. and Wenceslaus von Rybnik , on the side of the Bohemian King George of Podebrady . After the attack on Silesia by the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus in 1469, Johann III. defend his territories against Corvin's general Franz von Hagen. From 1471 he supported the successor of George of Podebrady, Vladislav II , whom he accompanied along with other Silesian princes on his way from Krakow to the coronation in Prague. After he later renounced the resistance and paid homage to Matthias Corvin, he was able to continue to own his duchy.

On the occasion of his marriage to Magdalene von Oppeln in 1478, Johann III. a mutual inheritance contract with their uncle Johann II , which was confirmed by King Matthias Corvinus. After the death of the widow of his cousin Johann IV , who left no heirs, he acquired Sohrau , Rybnik and Loslau , which he connected with his Duchy of Ratibor.
