Valter Aamodt

Valter Emil Aamodt (born March 25, 1902 in Bergen ; † 1989 ) was a Norwegian composer , conductor , music critic and choir director . He was a central figure in Norwegian choral and brass music in the 20th century .

Life

Family, childhood and education

Valter Aamodt was the eldest son of Olaf Karl Martin Aamodt (born June 24, 1867) and his wife Ragna Josephine (born December 30, 1873). His younger brother Thorleif Aamodt was also a musician. Valter began making music in the Fortunens Skoles Music Corps in 1911 at the age of nine . From 1915 he played in the youth corps of the Fortunens music corps . He also played in other wind and salon orchestras, such as the North Wind Orchestra , which he directed from 1920 to 1938. After self-studies in music theory, he studied with Johann Ludwig Mowinckel junior from 1922 to 1923 .

First compositions

At the beginning of the 1920s, compositions by Valter Aamodt were performed in various concerts - for example, on February 6, 1921, an elegy at a concert by the Musikforening [Musikverein] in Bergen, on August 2 and 5, 1921, a humoresque at concerts by the Divisionsmusik in Bergen , on December 11, 1921 at a concert of the Musikforening [Musikverein] in Bergen Sommeraftenidyll [summer evening idyll ] for string orchestra and on September 14, 1922 a festival polonaise at a concert of the Divisionsmusik in Bergen. The Sommeraftenidyll was performed twice in Oslo in 1922 under the direction of Mowinckel, on November 20th and December 28th. Hjalmar Borgstrøm wrote in Aftenposten on 21 November 1922 the Philharmonic concert in Oslo that Valter Aamodt quite a young composer from Bergen and the idyll very melodious and Gaske vakker [quite beautiful] was . In 1929 he published two male choirs in the Norsk Musikforlag , which a year later received an award from a university foundation for the promotion of male choir singing.

Stations as a choir director and conductor of wind orchestras

Aamodt headed the Fortunens Music Corps from 1924 to 1969 . From 1924 to 1939 the Arne Musikforening [Musikverein Arna] in the Arna district of Bergen. On November 6, 1926, Valter Aamodt took over the direction of the Follesø-mannskor [Folleso men's choir], which he directed until 1976. From 1938 to 1955 he directed the Haandværks- og Industriforenings Sangforening choir, the Freya men's choir from 1961 to 1967 and the Harmoniens Kor from 1946 to 1948 . From 1931 he was the association conductor of the Hordaland Singers' Association. In this function he participated in many national and district singers meetings and often led the entire choirs at these meetings. From 1928 he was also the conductor of the Norwegian Brass Band Association and also worked in this role in Bergen and other Norwegian cities. At the European Wind Music Competition in Belgium in 1954 he was the representative of the Norwegian Association. In the 60s and 70s he led the Ulriken Janitsjarkorps wind orchestra on several radio appearances . He led the orchestra of the music society "Harmonie" in Bergen, which Edvard Grieg had already conducted, and in 1944 the great anniversary orchestra of the music society. Aamodt successfully participated in a series of music competitions for choir and wind orchestra with his ensembles.

Other activities and functions

Aamodt was asked to serve as a juror at competitions. He directed musical training events offered by various Norwegian organizations such as the Tonika music publisher and the Norwegian Singers Association. He considered the cooperation between clubs and associations to be important and was involved in the establishment of individual associations. He performed various functions in both choir and brass bands. He did a great job in choosing the repertoire. He worked as a music critic for various newspapers, such as Arbeidet, Dagen [Der Tag], Morgenavisen [Die Morgenzeitung], and Bergens Tildende. He was a correspondent for clay art in Bergen and an employee of Sangerlivet. From January 1, 1946, he was Secretary General of the Norwegian Singing Association, technical and administrative director of the tonic courses, and editor and managing director of the magazine Norsk Sang. From 1949 to 1972 he was managing director and publishing director at Tonika .

Prizes and awards

He has received various honors and awards for his musical work and services to Norwegian choral and brass music. He was an honorary member of Fortuna Bergen Music Corps , Follesø mannskor , Hordaland Singers Association and Askøy Singers and Music Association . He has received the highest awards from the Bergen Singers Association, the Norwegian Brass Band Association, and the Norwegian National Singers Association. In 1966 he received the HM Royal Medal of Merit in Gold. In 1975 he was made an honorary citizen of Follesø. In 1975 Valter Aamodt received the Norwegian Grieg Prize with the Follesø Mannskor [male choir Follesø]. In 1977 he was appointed knight 1st class of the Order of Saint Olav .
