Vamık Djemal Volkan (born December 13, 1932 in Nicosia ) is an American psychiatrist and psychoanalyst of Cypriot Turkish origin and professor emeritus at the University of Virginia , who has made a name for himself in the field of peace and conflict research.

Life

Vamık Volkan comes from a Turkish family in Cyprus and studied medicine at Ankara University . In 1957 he emigrated to the USA, where he trained as a psychiatrist and analyst . Until 2001 he was professor of psychiatry at the University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville .

Peace and Conflict Research

Volkan researches the psychology of international conflicts and developed new theories of large group behavior in times of peace and war. He was a founding member and president of the International Society of Political Psychology (ISPP). In 1987 he founded the Center for the Study of Mind and Human Interaction (CSMHI), which he headed until 2002. The CSMHI is an interdisciplinary center that specializes in conflict resolution and peace work, especially in Eastern Europe .

Volkan worked as a consultant, mediator and envoy for the UN as well as for the American Psychiatric Association and other international organizations in many crisis areas of the world and was active in preventive and acute crisis intervention .

In 2006 he headed an international symposium of the Sigmund Freud Private Foundation on the subject of "Psychoanalysis and Violence". In the 2006 summer semester, Vamık Volkan was also a Freud Fulbright Professor at the Sigmund Freud Private Foundation.

Vamık Volkan is the author and co-author of more than 30 books that have been translated into more than 12 languages.

Awards

Vamik Volkan was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005, 2006 and 2007 .
