The Vattaru Atoll is an atoll of the eastern island chain of the Maldives in the Lakkadive Sea .
geography
The atoll divides the Vattaru Channel into two in its western area between Felidhu Atoll, five kilometers to the north, and Mulaku Atoll, further south .
The atoll has an approximately egg-shaped plan and, including its lagoon, a total area of 46.72 km². The lagoon is 22 to 37 meters deep and has a sandy bottom.
Islands
Today the atoll has only one small uninhabited island ( Vattaru ) on the southern rim of the reef, on the east side of the only passage from the lagoon to the open sea called Vattaru Kandu , which is only usable by boats. The island is overgrown with bushes and surrounded by a sandy beach. It has a land area of only 1.3 hectares (1.7 hectares including the beach).
There used to be an island on the west side, but it has now disappeared.
administration
The Vattaru Atoll, together with the Felidhu Atoll, forms the Maldivian administrative atoll Felidhu Atholhu , with the Thaana short name ވ(" Vaavu ").
The Vatta Kandu boat passage is a protected marine area .
