The Makunudhoo ( Makunudu , formerly Malcolm Atoll ) is the westernmost atoll of the Maldives and is in the north of the state, 18 kilometers west of the northwest side of the much larger Thiladhunmathi-Miladummadulhu -Atolls from which it is separated by a deep strait. It has a total area of ​​142.48 km². Less than one square kilometer (0.96 km²) of this is mainland, which is spread over four islands.

With a length of 28 kilometers and a maximum width of six kilometers, the atoll has an elongated and narrow shape in plan. The almost closed reef rim only has two openings on the east side, which can only be passed by boats to enter the lagoon . The lagoon has depths of up to 31 meters.

Of the four islands in the atoll, only the island of Makunudhoo on the northeastern reef rim is inhabited. The population at the 2006 census was 1,045. The three uninhabited islands are unused. In particular, there are no tourist islands .

Administratively, Maamakunudhoo belongs to the Maldivian administrative atoll ( district ) Thiladhunmathi Dhekunuburi ( Haa Dhaal ), which still includes part of the east neighboring Thiladhunmathi-Miladummadulhu -Atoll.
