Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen

Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen (born June 9, 1958 in Kiuruvesi ) is a Finnish theologian .

As the second child of Toivo and Aino Kärkkäinen, Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen grew up in a Lutheran family. When he was a teenager, the family found their spiritual home in a small Pentecostal church , but without giving up their connection with Lutheranism, so that Kärkkäinen calls themselves a “hybrid Christian” or “Lutherocostal” (from “Lutheran” and “Pentecostal”) .

Kärkkäinen studied education at the University of Jyväskylä and was a research assistant there , since 1983 lecturer at the Faculty of Education. A theology degree at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena followed. Meanwhile he was pastor of a small evangelical congregation, the Finnish Christian Fellowship in Los Angeles . After completing his studies, Kärkkäinen returned to Finland with his family. In 1989, he became the pastor of the Full Gospel Churches in Finland ordained , a classical Pentecostal church. From 1991 to 1994 he taught at the Full Gospel Bible College in Bangkok and from 1994 to 2000 he was director and professor at the Full Gospel IsoKirja College in Keuruu . At the University of Helsinki doctorate he 1998 trade ecumenical theology and dogmatic theology with a thesis on the ecumenical contacts Pentecostal and Roman Catholic Church . His habilitation thesis on the same topic followed in 1999 .

Kärkkäinen has held a chair in systematic theology at Fuller Theological Seminary since 2003 , and is also a lecturer in ecumenical studies at the University of Helsinki.

Kärkkäinen, who has published numerous books, has participated in several working groups of the World Council of Churches and in many theological, missionary and interreligious international meetings, including Edinburgh 2010 and the World Council of Churches (WCC) Conference on World Mission and Evangelization , which took place in 2005 took place in Athens .

Kärkkäinen has been an ordained pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America since 2015 .
