Veljko Barbieri

Veljko Barbieri (born May 14, 1950 in Split , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a Croatian writer , non-fiction author and gastronomy specialist, who is particularly committed to the preservation of Croatian culinary traditions. Barbieri also acted as a presenter of related television programs.

Life

Veljko Barbieri comes from an old family whose origins go back to the Venetian governor Francesco Barbieri of Trogir (1576). The Italian Barbieri family, on the other hand, came from Brescia . His father was a journalist, founder and editor of various Croatian newspapers and was a correspondent in Mexico for a few years from 1964 , where Veljko Barbieri also lived for two years and learned Spanish , French and English .

After graduating from university in Zagreb , where he studied philosophy , French and archeology , and later Spanish, Veljko Barbieri wrote fourteen prose books. He is represented in many domestic and foreign anthologies . His best-known novel, Epitaph of a Royal Gourmet ( Epitaf carskog gurmana ), in which gastronomy is the starting point of the fight against authoritarian rule, is one of the best-selling Croatian books of modern times with 220,000 copies. In addition, 105,000 copies have been sold in the German-speaking area. The filming rights have just been bought up and a filming by the director Christoph Heckenbücker is planned for 2012 in Cyprus , Croatia and Germany .

Barbieri regularly writes gastronomic sections in magazines and culinary articles for Croatian television. For example, in 2009 he produced an episode of the Menus of Lost Time in Dubrovnik , which was about the preparation of forgotten traditional dishes from Croatia and the Republic of Dubrovnik . The muse of many of his books is his grandmother Anka Barbieri, who raised him together with his grandfather because his parents separated shortly after his birth and his mother believed he was safer there because of a scarlet fever epidemic that was rampant in the Makarska region .
