List of grape varieties

The white wine variety Verdeca is an autochthonous variety of southern Italy and is mainly grown in the Apulia region. It produces a pale yellow, greenish wine with a neutral aroma (in its best form, the white wine has an almond bouquet ) and taste. The average alcohol content is a moderate 11–12% by volume.

This variety is mainly used as a basis for Vermouth and blends , for example of the DOC - white wine Locorotondo and Martina Franca . It is often blended with Bianco d'Alessano , Bombino Bianco , Fiano and Malvasia Toscana .

With the increasing decline in vermouth sales, the Verdeca acreage is also on the decline. At the beginning of the 1990s, however, 3990 hectares were still planted with the Verdeca.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is hairy white wool. The young leaves are hairy like a spider web and are pale green to white in color.
  • The medium-sized to large leaves are rounded or three-lobed and hardly curved. The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are wide compared to other varieties.
  • The conical grape is large, shouldered and moderately dense. The round to slightly oval berries are medium-sized and whitish-green in color. The taste of the berries is neutral.

The moderately vigorous grape variety ripens about 30–35 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen very late. The yields are medium high. It is less susceptible to the genuine and downy mildew .
