Nielsen measures what consumers watch ( watch area), for example advertising or programs, and what they buy ( buy area), for example brands and products. The company has offices in approximately 100 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, the Middle East, North America, South America and Russia.

David L. Calhoun served as the company's CEO since August 23, 2006 . Calhoun succeeds Rob Ruijter (CFO of VNU), who had served as interim CEO since June 2006. Mitch Barns has been CEO since January 1, 2014.

While Nielsen is primarily associated with Nielsen ratings in the USA , this quota research only accounts for about a quarter of the business. After the structures had been simplified over the past few years, Nielsen now divides the business areas into two large areas: Watch and Buy .

history

In 1923 Arthur C. Nielsen founded AC Nielsen in the United States . It was the first company to offer market research . International expansion began in 1939. In 1954 AC Nielsen Germany was founded, which is also called The Nielsen Company today.

Nielsen was acquired by Dun & Bradstreet in 1984 . In 1996, D&B divided the company into two independent companies: Nielsen Media Research, responsible for measuring television ratings, and AC Nielsen, responsible for box office data and research into consumer buying behavior. In 1999 Nielsen Media Research was bought by the Dutch group VNU (Verenigde Nederlandse Uitgeverijen). VNU later also bought AC Nielsen and merged the two companies again in 2001. The company's publications include The Hollywood Reporter and Billboard magazine. In 2007, the VNU Group, to which the Nielsen companies belong, was renamed The Nielsen Company.

From 2006 to 2011 the company was owned by financial investors. In January 2011, the company went public on the New York Stock Exchange . In 2015, The Nielsen Company relocated from Diemen in the Netherlands to London in the UK . The main administrative center remained in New York City .

Branches

Germany

In Germany, Nielsen has a branch in Frankfurt am Main (branches in Hamburg and Munich ), which specializes in retail research and consumer analysis, The Nielsen Company (Germany) GmbH . When it comes to recording and analyzing gross advertising sales in Germany, Nielsen Media Research has a quasi-monopoly due to the low market importance of Thomson Media Control . In August 2016, Nielsen opened the subsidiary Tele Medical GmbH, which specializes in medical technology , in Magdeburg .

criticism
