Traffic Company

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A transport company (VU) is a company , the transport services , ie transport , traffic performance , handling or other functions such as storage or packaging offering. It should be noted that storage and packaging refers to the pure transport company and, if necessary, to a mixed operation, with luggage storage in lockers also being considered as storage .

Furnishing

For this purpose, the transport company has means of transport ( infrastructure , mobile device, drive energy, manpower , organization and operation, etc.) at its disposal, which are coordinated with entrepreneurial or business management methods and facilities ( human resources , financing , accounting and bookkeeping , marketing , sales ) in such a way that the corporate goals are achieved. Transport companies use transport technology , i.e. processes for the process sequence of changes in the location of people, goods or messages.

Legal form / sponsorship

Transport companies can have different ownership and legal forms, with public or private owners as well as mixed forms. As a result of the liberalization and de-nationalization of the transport system in Europe at the end of the 20th century, the share of state-owned transport companies (also known as transport companies) has decreased.

Most transport companies offer transport services primarily for their own economic interests. However, the state can also have an interest in providing transport services, although for purely economic reasons the transport offer is not expedient (see transport policy , services of general interest / basic services ). In this case, the state assumes responsibility or sponsorship for the provision of the transport service, while the transport company acts as the executing authority.

Other meanings

A transport company or a transport company is referred to in various ways

  • in the broader sense, an organizational unit whose task is the production of transport services . This unit does not necessarily have to be a transport company, but can also be a special department or a special administrative unit.
  • in the narrower sense, a non-independent economic entity that is responsible for the production of transport services as part of public administration . Examples: Railway operation, which can exist as part of the administration of a transport ministry, whose entrepreneurial decisions and tasks can be influenced by transport policy and whose employees work as civil servants; an operation of the local public transport ( ÖPNV ), which exists as a special administrative unit of the municipal traffic administration. According to this definition, there are hardly any transport companies in a central administration economy, but predominantly transport companies.
