Vegetative characteristics

The bracts are deeply notched, the underside is hairy and paler than the upper side.

The glossy speedwell grows as an annual herbaceous plant and usually reaches heights of 8 to 15 centimeters. The stalk, which is bare and strong, usually has numerous, prostrate or ascending side branches at the base.

The opposite leaves and the alternate bracts are short stalked. The somewhat thick, shiny, almost bare leaf blade is semicircular-triangular in shape and dark green in color. The leaf margin is roughly notched and clearly rolled down. The underside of the leaf is noticeably paler than the upper side and hairy much more densely.

Generative characteristics

Fruit with a stalk: the capsule bay is acute-angled, the halves of the capsule are roughly the same size. The fruit is only slightly compressed. The fruit stalk is curved back.
In addition to longer glandular hairs, the fruit has shorter glandeless hairs.

The shiny speedwell blooms mainly from April to June and mostly also from July to October. The flowers are in a racemose inflorescence . The hermaphrodite flowers have a diameter of 5 to 8 millimeters and have a double flower envelope . The corolla is sky-blue in color, rarely almost white and usually has a dark throat ring.

The capsule fruit , 3 to 4 millimeters long and 4 to 6 millimeters wide, is rounded or kidney-shaped and has weak margins. It has a thick coat of short, glandless hair and, in addition, short and long glandular hair. The stylus is usually 1 to 1.6 millimeters long. The hardly hairy calyx tips are broadly ovate and overlap at the base.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14.

Occurrence

Veronica polita is widespread from southern Scandinavia to the Mediterranean area . To the east, the Shining Speedwell penetrates to East Asia . It is mostly common in Central Europe .

In Germany and Austria, the shiny honorary award is widespread and in some cases can be found quite frequently; only in northern Germany it is absent over longer stretches. In Switzerland, the shiny speedwell is only rarely found in the central area, otherwise it is widespread.

Veronica polita grows in arable weed societies, vineyards and gardens. It prefers more or less fresh, mostly nutrient-rich and often somewhat sandy loam soils . In Central Europe it is a character species of the Thlaspio-Veronicetum politae from the Fumario-Euphorbion association.
