action

When looking for a flat in Paris, the 24-year-old illustrator Alice quickly feels drawn to the older real estate agent Julien Lemonnier, whom she meets while viewing apartments, but who is happily married to Marie. With her he has their teenage son Mathias . Despite initial hesitation, Julien soon begins an affair with the younger Alice. A love relationship quickly develops for her and Julien. After Alice found out from Julien that his wife runs a small tea shop, she actually only wants to see Marie Lemonnier there once. But because someone is looking for a temporary worker here, Alice begins to work as a waitress. She doesn't tell Julien anything about it. Marie and Alice (aka "Lilli") even become friends over time and Alice tells her about their casual relationship with a married "engineer".

Julien has a serious car accident , which is followed by a lengthy stay in hospital and rehabilitation. When Marie Julien's things are handed over to the hospital and a message is just coming in on his smartphone , Marie learns of his love affair when she checks the messages. At first she can hardly believe it and when they find a very intimate photo of Alice there, she is utterly devastated. After the initial shock is over, she almost makes up her mind not to simply accept this humiliation. Without further ado, she sends messages to Alice in Julien's name. Since she doesn't know anything about the accident, she takes Julien's decision to end their relationship seriously. Marie pretends to her that she will close the teaspoon for three months from now on because she is going on a longer vacation trip with her husband.

After Julien's recovery, Marie confronts him with her findings. Marie was able to end the affair with Alice through her clever tactics, but her marriage still fails, because Marie is too deeply disappointed by Julien's infidelity. Although he tries to win Marie's love back and even asks her forgiveness, the divorce ultimately follows .

criticism

Christopher Schmitt from Prisma.de wrote: “Paris is considered the city of love. The French capital is a popular travel destination among lovers and markets itself accordingly. In Philippe Harel's drama 'Happiness Betrayed', however, Paris becomes the scene of what love can do. ”“ The sensitive film illuminates adultery from three perspectives ”and reports“ sensitively ”“ on the relationships between the main characters. ”

The Osnabrücker Zeitung also praised the “successful change of perspective.” It “not only enables an expanded view of the motives and consequences of the actions of all three protagonists. In his very calmly staged drama, Harel particularly explores the possibilities and limits of atonement and forgiveness. Unfortunately, the final scene in which an off-speaker announces the end of the story to the audience seems a bit helpless. Still very worth seeing - not least because of the strong ensemble. "
