The genus Vertigo is a species-rich genus of the family of diaper snails (Vertiginidae) from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora).

features

The representatives of the genus Vertigo have right and left wound, cylindrical, oblong-cylindrical to egg-shaped cases with 5 to 8 turns. The housings are up to 4 mm high and 2.3 mm wide. They are mostly smooth, rarely ribbed and mostly dark in color. The whorls are convex or almost flattened. The outer edge of the mouth is often flattened or slightly curved inward. The mouth edge is simply with a sharp edge, or thickened lipped and / or bent outwards. The mouth can be reinforced with up to seven teeth, but it can also be unreinforced.

In the genital system, the penis is comparatively long with an epiphallus. The penile appendix is missing, the penile retractor muscle consists of one muscle cord. It starts at the epiphallus. The spermatic duct is long and the vagina is comparatively long. The stem of the seminal vesicle is comparatively very long and several times longer than the elongated, egg-shaped seminal vesicle itself.

Geographical distribution

The species of the genus occur in the Holarctic .

Taxonomy

The taxon was drawn up in 1773 by Otto Friedrich Müller . The type is Vertigo pusilla Müller, 1774 by subsequent monotype . Currently over 70 species are included in the genus Vertigo. However, the scope is quite uncertain as there is no comprehensive revision of the genre. The vertigo species of North America accepted as valid taxa by Jeffrey Nekola and Brian Jones in 2010 are marked by individual records .

Vertigo shimochii Kuroda & Amano, 1960 was synonymous with Gastrocopta servilis (Gould, 1843) in 2012 .

Schileyko (1998) divides the genus into eight sub-genera:

  • Vertigo (Vertigo) Müller, 1773
  • Vertigo (Alloptyx) Pilsbry, 1953
  • Vertigo (Augustula) Sterki, 1888
  • Vertigo (Isthmia) Gray, 1821
  • Vertigo (Nearctula) Sterki, 1892
  • Vertigo (Ptychalaea) O. Boettger, 1889
  • Vertigo (Staurodon) Lowe, 1852
  • Vertigo (Vertillaria) Pilsbry, 1920

This subdivision has hardly found any resonance. Some sub-genera were also understood as independent genera. Other authors also rate Vertilla Moquin-Tandon, 1856, as a subgenus of Vertigo .
