The Vesser in Vesser

location

Vesser is located in the valley of the Vesser in the middle of the Thuringian Forest southwest of Schmiedefeld and southeast of the core town of Suhl in a landscape protection area .

history

The place was mentioned for the first time in 900 AD. Already in the Middle Ages there were reports of a hammer mill that was operated with the water power of the river Vesser . In the following centuries the construction of further plants is handed down:

  • Construction of a grinding and oil mill in 1690
  • Construction of a cutting mill in 1696
  • Construction of a Zainhammer in 1700
  • Construction of a cutting mill in 1809

Vesser was hit by the witch hunt in 1662 and 1663 . Two women got into witch trials and were beheaded.

Vesser was parish together with Schmiedefeld in Frauenwald until 1758 . When Schmiedefeld separated from the mother church in Frauenwald, the residents of Vesser did not have to go to the church in Frauenwald, which is over an hour away. From now on, the pastor of Schmiedefeld preached three times a year in the church in Vesser and also gave the sermon there for the parish festival.

Until 1815, the place belonged to the Henneberg or Electoral Saxon office Schleusingen and then came to the Schleusingen district of the newly formed Prussian province of Saxony , where it remained until 1945. On April 1, 1994, Vesser joined the independent city of Suhl at the request of a majority of the population. In 1999 the title of "state-approved resort" was successfully defended according to the new criteria of the state of Thuringia.

Winter sports

Cross-country ski run in Vesser
Natural ski jump

Due to its attractive location in the middle of forests and mountain meadows in the Vessertal-Thuringian Forest biosphere reserve and its good tourist infrastructure, Vesser has developed into a popular tourist destination. Especially in winter, an approx. 3 kilometer long cross-country ski run garden is created every year , and many cross- country trails in the ski area around the village are groomed.

There is also a small ski lift and a toboggan slope in the village.

At the edge of the forest is the Vessertalschanze, built in 1950/51 (formerly Walter-Ulbricht-Schanze). It is the largest natural ski jump in Germany, the hill record from 2002 is 99 meters.
