Vestards Šimkus

Vestards Šimkus (born August 21, 1984 in Jūrmala , Latvian SSR ) is a Latvian pianist .

Life

Vestards Šimkus began learning the piano at the Emīls Dārziņš music school in Riga at the age of five . Later his teachers were Dmitri Alexandrowitsch Baschkirow and Claudio Martinez Mehner in Madrid , Daniel Pollack in Los Angeles , and Vadim Suchanov in Munich . His composition teacher was Peteris Vasks . He was one of the master classes of Lazar Berman , Peter Frankl and Igor Zhukov, among others .

He has worked in Europe and the United States since 1998. So far, he has worked with the BBC Philharmonic , the Orchester National de France , the Czech Philharmonic , the Kremerata Baltica , the Borodin Quartet , the violinist Isabelle van Keulen and the Northwest German Philharmonic . In Germany he appeared at the Kissinger Sommer and the 17th Usedom Music Festival .

Some of his own compositions have been published by Schott Music .

Prices

In addition to numerous prizes and awards in his home country, Šimkus won the 2001 International Piano Competition in Stockholm , the International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Los Angeles in 2002, the 5th Kissinger Piano Olympics in 2007 and the 55th Maria Canals Competition in Barcelona in 2009 first place.

He received the Order of the White Star of Estonia in 2005 .
