Vetiver oil
Vetiver oil (also: Vetyver or Vetyvert oil) is an essential oil that is obtained from vetiver , a sweet grass that originally comes from tropical Asia .
Extraction
Vetiver oil is obtained from the roots of the tropical grass species Vetiveria zizanioides by steam distillation . Typical countries of origin are Réunion (variety “Bourbon”), Haiti , Indonesia , Brazil , China and India . The world annual production of Indonesia is around 100 tons .
properties
The oil is thick, brown to reddish-brown; the smell is described as heavy, earthy, balsamic. The density is between 0.978 and 0.998 g · ml −1 , it is soluble in ethanol and insoluble in water. The refractive index is between 1.521 and 1.526 at 20 ° C. Since different types of grass are processed and fresh and dried roots are used, there are great differences in quality in the oils available in stores.

Toxicological data |
The main components of vetiver oil are α- Vetivon (also: Isonootkaton , α-Vetiveron, 5-10%) and β-Vetivon (3-5%), khusimol (10-15%) and isovalencenol (5-10%). The complex mixture also contains other sesqui terpenoids (hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, acids).
Biosynthetic α- source of two structural isomers and β-Vetivon are eudesmane - sesquiterpenes .
use
Vetiver oil is used in perfume production , aromatherapy and naturopathy and also serves as an incense . It is also used as an insect repellent and exhibits antimicrobial properties.
The odorant vetiveryl acetate is of great importance for the production of perfume . Technical vetiveryl acetate is a mixture of substances that is obtained by acetylating vetiver oil with acetic anhydride and mainly contains the acetates of the esterifiable alcohols in vetiver oil. In this, the bitter, smoky and clearly earthy nuances of vetiver oil take a back seat, while the woody-balsamic fragrance components unfold much more elegantly.
