The association was founded on May 11, 1907 as Viktoria Herzberg . The first association members were external workers who worked for the local furniture factory. After the team was no longer able to play in the autumn of the same year because five members were called up for military service. The game was inactive for a while. The Richard Schollbach association , which came from the Berlin “Association for Movement Games”, was then used to gain new members . The members then agreed to call the club VfB Herzberg in the future. In order to increase the quality of play even further, the club also got guest players from the Cottbus- based Britannia 98 . On May 20, 1909, a first friendly game came about with the club from neighboring Jessen , which was lost 11-0. After that, relationships were established with other clubs from neighboring towns and games were played over and over again. After several changes of the sports field, a new field was finally opened on June 12, 1910 in the area of some parade ground parts. The opening game was won 2-0 against FC Alemannia Jessen . Encouraged by this, the Berlin FC Stern 1889 was challenged. The game on August 14, 1910 was then lost 6-1 in front of a large crowd.

Central German championship until World War II

On October 14, 1911, the Gau Elbe / Elster was founded. This first season 1911/12 was played in the Gau as a trial round without champions. At the end of this season, VfB landed in third place with 8: 4 points. The next season , which was characterized by a withdrawn team and ended without participants in the finals, finally resulted in the club in second place with 5: 3 points. With the reduced number of opponents, the 1913/14 season ended again in second place, this time with 9: 3 points. Due to the First World War , there was no game operation in the VfB Gau in the next season. At the German athletics championships in 1920 , Fritz Graßmann , who started for the club, won the silver medal in the 5000-meter run .

It was not until the 1923/24 season , 10 years later, that the club began to play properly again in the Gau. The team finished this first season with 6: 6 points in fourth place. For the next season the Gauliga was then again divided into two seasons. In the Elbe season , the club then reached third place again with 6: 6 points. Similar placements followed in the next few years. From the 1927/28 season onwards, the league was once again played on a single track. Here the team was able to finish third again. However, compared to the previous season this time in a league of ten participants. The same place was then retracted again in the 1928/29 season.

The team was able to achieve the Gaumeist title for the first time in the 1929/30 season . In the championship finals, however, it was already over in the first preliminary round after a 9-2 defeat against Riesaer SV . For the 1930/31 season , the Gauliga Elbe / Elster was combined with the Gauliga Mulde . The team was thus classified in the Elbe-Elster relay and once again took third place at the end of the season. On August 26, 1931, the city of Herzberg inaugurated a new gym and sports field. As a cup opponent in the VMBV-Pokakl, the team even received VfB Leipzig . The game on September 18, 1931 was watched by 2,000 spectators and ended in a 3-0 defeat. The last season of the Central German Football Championship ends after the 1932/33 season with 14:14 points in fifth place. The VfB was then incorporated into the game operations of the Gauliga Mitte . Due to the outbreak of the Second World War , the number of athletes was steadily decimated. Because of this, soon only youngsters played in the team to keep the game going.
