Via Alta 1st stage

The Via Alta Vallemaggia (VAVM) is a demanding mountain hike along the peaks that separate the Valle Maggia from the Verzasca valley. The high trail was opened in 2009 by the Via Alta Vallemaggia association . The alpine high path is climbed in six daily stages (level of difficulty on the six-part SAC hiking scale T4, for the first and last stage T3).

The Via Alta connects five alpine huts . These are normally unmanaged bases with limited capacity, which can be overcrowded during the main tour season in July and August.

Daily stages of the Via Alta Vallemaggia

• The first stage leads from the southern starting point of Via Alta Vallemaggia, from Cardada ( 1329  m ) ⊙ via Cardada-Cimetta ( 1671  m ), Cima della Trosa ( 1869  m ), Madone ( 2039  m ), Bocchetta d'Orgnana ( 1951  m ) , from now on marked white-blue-white over the ridge to the Pizzo d'Orgnana ( 1951  m ), Nimi Pass ( 2048  m ) to the Alpe Nimi hut ( 1718  m ). Variation: From Cangello (below Bochetta di Orgnana) you can switch to the white-red-white marked mountain hiking trail to Alpe di Nimi. The hiking time is around 7 ½ hours.

• The second stage leads from the Alpe Nimi hut over the ridge to Madom da Sgióf ( 2265  m ), Deva Pass ( 2265  m ) to the Alpe Masnee hut ( 2063  m ). The hiking time is around 3 ½ hours.

• The third stage leads from the Alpe Masnee below the Pizzo Costisc to Scimarmota ( 2064  m ), below the Pizzo Dromegio ( 2232  m ) to the Alpe Cuasca ( 1693  m ), over the Pass dei due Laghi ( 2069  m ) to the Alpe Spluga hut ( 1838  m ). The hiking time is around 8 hours.

• The fourth stage leads from the Alpe Spluga to the Pascolo dei Laghi ( 1964  m ), over the Bocchetta del Sasso Bello ( 2136  m ), the Passo di Chènt ( 2224  m ) to the Tomeo hut ( 1739  m ). The hiking time is around 7 hours.

• The fifth stage does not lead to the Soveltra hut ( 1534  m ) (closed due to fire until 2020), but via the new path under Pizzo Campala ( 2645  m ), Bocchetta della Campala ( 2323  m ) to Capanna Barone ( 2172  m ) ⊙ . The hiking time is 8 to 9 hours.

• The sixth and last stage leads from the Barone Hut over the Bocchetta della Campala, past the Soveltra Hut to the Alpe di Fontana and over the Passo Fornale ( 2327  m ), Mognola Lake ( 2003  m ) to the village of Fusio ( 1281  m ) ⊙ . The route takes around 7 to 9 hours. Variation: from the Soveltra hut, the Pizzo Campo Tencia ( 3,071  m ) can also be climbed.
