Vicente Rodríguez Guillén (born July 16, 1981 in Valencia ), known as Vicente , is a former Spanish football player . Vicente played for Valencia CF between 2000 and 2011 .

Vicente is characterized above all by his cross runs and dribbling, but also by his game intelligence.

Career

Vicente grew up in Valencia with his father Vicente, his mother Fina, his older sister Laura and his younger brother Alejandro .

He started his football career in the amateur league at his hometown club UD Levante , where he was promoted to the professional team in the 1997/98 season. In the summer of 2000 he moved to his self-proclaimed favorite club, the city rivals and first division side FC Valencia .

His first season at the Estadio Mestalla was a great success. Vicente has scored five goals in 33 games in the Primera División and also played 13 games for his club in the UEFA Champions League . In the final defeat against FC Bayern Munich , however, he only sat on the bench. In the following 2001/02 season , the young professional continued his streak of success. After Kily González struggled with an injury in the first half of the season, Vicente developed into a regular player. In 2002 he won the championship with Valencia. In 2002/03 he gained further experience in the Champions League until Valencia was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Inter Milan .

The big breakthrough came in the 2003/04 season . At the end of the season, he celebrated his greatest successes with his club, first place in the Spanish championship and victory in the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Supercup. In the final of the UEFA Cup, he scored the first goal himself and set up Mista's winning goal . He scored 16 league goals this season, making him the most dangerous midfielder in the Spanish league. At the beginning of the next season Vicente injured his left ankle and was therefore out for almost the entire season. Strongly weakened and with a new coach, his team was only able to take 7th place in the championship this season and thus only play in the UI Cup .

In 2004 Vicente extended a contract with Valencia CF until 2011. He was able to cope with his long-term injury and almost reach his form of the 2003/04 season. On January 18, 2006 Vicente injured himself in the game against CA Osasuna (2-0) after a shot on goal in the right ankle and was then again almost half a year. Since then Vicente has not regained his form, which is why he was not nominated for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.

2007 was another lost year for Vicente. After his ankle problems healed, he struggled with various muscular problems and was only able to play sporadically. This season , little has changed in this status, so that he continues to mostly only appear as a substitute.

For the 2010/11 season Vicente was nominated as captain, but got only sporadic missions under coach Unai Emery . He turned down several offers, especially from Russia, but instead is toying with a move to Atlético Madrid if his situation does not change. In the second half of the season Vicente was partially suspended by the coach, as he was seen in a bar around five in the morning, although training was on the same day. He was officially adopted at the last home game of the season.

On September 2, 2011, Vicente signed a one-year contract with Brighton & Hove Albion .

National team

His first appearances in the Spanish U16 national team, which came third at the 1998 European Championship, brought Vicente a lot of experience. While he was still extremely successful with the U21, he made his debut in the senior national team . On March 28, 2001 he ran in the friendly against France (2-1) for the first time there, but was not nominated for the 2002 World Cup .

After the missed World Cup, he was used in all eight games in the European Championship qualification when Spain finished second behind Greece in Group 3. Vicente scored his only goal in the play-off second leg win over Norway , through which Spain moved into the finals. At the 2004 European Championships he was the best left midfielder and in great shape. Vicente couldn't get fit for the 2006 World Cup and had to stay at home. Since then he has been fighting for a return to the national team.

Vicente has played a total of 38 games so far and scored 3 goals in the dress of the Spanish national team .
