The Vierfleckige Kugelladybug or Vierfleckige Schildlaus-Ladybird ( Brumus quadripustulatus or Exochomus q. ) Is a beetle from the family of ladybirds (Coccinellidae).

features

The beetles are three to five millimeters long, their bodies are broad, oval and arched. Their wings are black and each have two red, more rarely yellow spots. The one near the shoulder has the shape of a horseshoe or a mirror-inverted comma , the back one, near the wing cover seam, is smaller and flattened. The pronotum is also black, but the front corners can be lighter colored like the tibia and tarsi. Its antennae have nine segments and are very short.

Occurrence

The beetles are found all over Europe to southern Norway and central Sweden and Asia . They live mainly on conifers , especially on young pines , spruces , larches and junipers , but also on deciduous trees such as hawthorn , maple and buckthorn .

Way of life

The beetles overwinter in the litter in the moss and leaves.

The imagines and larvae of Vierfleckigen ball Ladybugs feed on thyroid and aphids . The beetles sometimes also eat their own larvae.
