Viktor von Lang (born March 2, 1838 in Wiener Neustadt ; † July 3, 1921 in Vienna ) was an Austrian physicist and co-founder and pioneer of research into crystallography .

Life

During his eight-semester studies at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Vienna , Lang worked at the Physics Institute there for three years. He received his doctorate in 1859 on "Physical Relationships of Crystallized Bodies" at the University of Giessen and had early scientific connections to Paris and London.

After completing his doctorate, Lang worked for a year with Gustav Robert Kirchhoff and Robert Wilhelm Bunsen in Heidelberg and then moved to Paris to work with the experimental physicist Henri Victor Regnault .

In 1861 he returned to Vienna and completed his habilitation on "The Physics of Crystals". He was initially appointed to the Kensington Museum in London; After two years of activity, he was appointed Associate Professor of Physics in Graz in 1864, and in 1866 he was appointed to the Chair of Physics in Vienna as the successor to August Kunzek (1795-1865).

Lang worked scientifically in a wide range of physics. His main lifelong theme was the physical properties of crystals.

He died in Vienna in 1921 at the age of 84. In 1929 a memorial was erected to him in the arcade courtyard of the university. He was an honorary doctor of the University of Oxford , a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and a member of the French Legion of Honor . In 1897 he was chairman of the Society of German Natural Scientists and Doctors .

meaning

He is counted among the pioneers and founders of crystal physics. His students included Franz-Serafin Exner , Johann Puluj , Ernst Lecher , Anton Lampa , and Felix Ehrenhaft . The latter two later joined the circle of Franz-Serafin Exner.
