The Villanderer Berg (also Villandersberg , Italian Monte Villandro ) or the Sarner Scharte ( 2509 m slm ), formerly also called Zwölfernock , is one of the southernmost higher mountain peaks in the eastern ridge of the Sarntal Alps . The mountain shows its more impressive side in a westerly direction towards the Sarntal , where it breaks off with mighty, almost vertical porphyry walls. On the other hand, towards the east, towards the Eisack Valley , the mountain descends slightly towards the Villanderer Almen. To the east of the summit are also the Totensee and the Totenkirchlein .
The name for the mountain, which is more common in South Tyrol, is Sarner Scharte , which hiked from a 2381 m high notch in the south to the summit; the name of Villanderer Berg is more recent, but has established itself on maps as the name of the summit point. Sarner Scharte is also shown on maps, but there it is mainly used for a 2460 m high pre-summit in the south .
In recent years the mountain has been further developed for tourism from the east side. In addition to the Gasser Hut and Mair in Plun , the Rinderplatz was also opened. These cultivated alpine pastures and a fitness trail , as well as the expansion of the street from Villanders and the construction of parking lots increased the number of visitors on the mountain. In 2005, a larger storage basin was built at the Gasser hut in order to guarantee the neighboring farmers sufficient water to irrigate their fields
