Vimeiro is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the Portuguese district ( concelho ) of Lourinhã . 1470 inhabitants live in it (as of June 30, 2011).

history

Vimeiro was first mentioned in a document from the 12th century. At the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century, the place became an independent municipality.

In 1808 the Battle of Vimeiro took place here. Some of the troops, namely two British brigades, went ashore in nearby Porto Novo. The future General Wellington initially quartered in Vimeiro. On August 21, 1808, the Portuguese-British defense forces under his command met the French invasion army under General Junot here . The French were defeated and broke off their occupation of Portugal by signing the Cintra Convention .

Attractions

A monument in the style of the early 19th century was inaugurated in 1908 on the centenary of the Battle of Vimeiro. A visitor center has also been set up at the site of the battle. In addition, the house in which the British Commander-in-Chief resided is a listed building.

Other architectural monuments of the municipality are two sacred buildings , including the three-aisled parish church Igreja Paroquial do Vimeiro from the late 15th century. The baroque church, also named Igreja de São Miguel (English: Church of St. Michael) after its patron saint , shows a. Azulejos and altarpieces made of gilded and polished wood.
