The Vinicunca (also Rainbow Mountain , Eng. Rainbow Mountain ) is a mountain southeast of Cusco in the province Quispicanchi in southern Peru . With its seven different colors that run parallel to each other, it looks like a rainbow .

The Vinicunca can be reached via Cusco and the village of Quechuyno with a view of the Ausangate . From there, the Vinicunca can in a day trip hiked be. It is considered a tourist attraction .
The colors are the result of superimposed minerals that were deposited there for millions of years. These sediment layers were pushed from a horizontal to an almost vertical position by plate tectonics . The iron oxide contained in it led to the reddish color, manganese to the pink tones, a yellow color comes from sulfur . A reaction of copper , water and oxygen resulted in the blue-green discoloration. The black stripes are explained by the occurrence of granite .
