Gerd Held (born 1951 in Osnabrück ) is a German social scientist and journalist .

Life

After training and working as a machine setter, Held completed a degree in social sciences from 1984, which he completed with a diploma, and social philosophy ( maîtrise degree ) in Hanover and Paris . He then worked as a scientist and publicist in Paris and Valencia . From 1993 to 2003 he worked as a research assistant at the Faculty of Spatial Planning at the University of Dortmund , where he did his doctorate and habilitation and then worked as a private lecturer . From 2006 to 2007 he was a research assistant at the Leibniz Institute for Spatial Social Research in Erkner .

Held has been a freelance journalist since 2008, including for Die Welt , the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung , the axis of the good , The European , Novo and Tichy's insight , and a private lecturer at the Technical University of Berlin . He lives in Berlin.

Robert Kaltenbrunner wrote in the Frankfurter Rundschau about Held's book Territorium und Großstadt: The spatial differentiation of modernity , it comes up with “surprising reflections” on how life and space relate to one another. Held's insight is plausible that the openness and strategic scope of a society are essentially determined by the way in which it is structured spatially and that problems of order in a state and an economy are linked to space. In addition, it is about the question of identity in modern cities. In a “large-scale sociological and spatial science experiment” the author moves “in an almost unorthodox way between intellectual imagination, culturally and historically often remote finds and philosophical speculation”.
